PHOENIX -- Rangers manager Jeff Banister said pitcher Bartolo Colon was having trouble hitting the edges of the plate with his pitches Tuesday night.
Colon said that wasn't quite the case.
"I was hitting the corners, the umpire didn't make a few calls," Colon said.
Maybe that's why Banister got into it with home-plate umpire Chris Segal later in the game. But it was still a tough night for Colon as his quest to be the all-time winningest pitcher from Latin America is starting to take on a quixotic quality.
It hasn't turned into an impossible dream, but that one more victory to pass Dennis Martinez continues to elude him. Colon's fifth attempt for career win No. 246 came up short again when he allowed five runs in five innings in a 6-0 loss to the D-backs on Tuesday night.
"I never get frustrated," Colon said. "When it happens, it happens. I don't get frustrated. I don't think about it. It only makes it worse if I start thinking about it."
The loss at Chase Field snapped the Rangers' four-game winning streak. Instead, Colon now has a personal five-game losing streak since tying Martinez's record June 30 against the White Sox. He has a 6.46 ERA in those five games and has given up 38 hits in 30 2/3 innings.
"When he is sharp, gets good movement and keeps the ball down to all the quadrants that are spots for him and he's executing pitches, he's getting hitters out," Banister said. "He gets behind and working toward the wide part of the plate and it gets elevated, especially the second time through, that's probably been the challenge for him. I thought stuff tonight was sharp, velocity was there, threw some good changeups. PItches that weren't executed on the edges were the challenge."

A.J. Pollock's 15th home run of the season gave the D-backs a 1-0 lead in the first, Paul Goldschmidt had an RBI double in the third and Nick Ahmed had a two-run double in the fourth. He scored on a two-out single by Jonathan Jay.
"Over the past five starts, I felt better tonight," Colon said. "I felt strong. I felt good tonight. It didn't happen, but I feel good and I feel healthy. I'm still heading the right way."

The Rangers offense wasn't able to muster anything against D-backs starter Zack Godley, who held them to two hits in seven innings while striking out 10. The Rangers entered the game hitting .281 with 71 runs scored, 21 home runs and a .500 slugging percentage in 11 games since the All-Star break.
"Godley was pretty sharp tonight," Banister said. "The fastball was fresh, but the breaking ball was the difference. The ability to land the breaking ball in chase zones made it very challenging for us."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Rookie left-hander Jeffrey Springs made his Major League debut after being called up from Triple-A Round Rock. He allowed one run on a hit and a couple of walks but he also struck out three in two innings.
"It was pretty surreal but exciting," Springs said. "It's surreal until you actually get here and then it's pretty awesome."

The Rangers let Colon bat in the fifth even though they trailed 5-0. Colon took strike one from Godley and then Banister started yelling from the dugout. He and Segal were barking at each other for several moments before Banister ceased. Colon ended up striking out.

Springs set down the order in the seventh. Eduardo Escobar grounded out on a nice play by shortstop Elvis Andrus for the second out of the inning. The D-backs challenged the call at first and it stood after review.

Right-hander Yovani Gallardo pitches against the Orioles in the first of a four-game series at 7:05 p.m. CT Thursday at Globe Life Park in Arlington. Gallardo has pitched 11 1/3 scoreless innings in winning his last two starts. He has allowed five hits, walked eight and struck out six in those two games. He is 1-1 with a 5.94 ERA in three career starts against the Orioles. Right-hander Andrew Cashner is scheduled to pitch for the Orioles.
