Phillies claim Freddy Tarnok

June 1st, 2024

The Phillies have claimed right-handed pitcher Freddy Tarnok off waivers from the Oakland Athletics. He has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for Tarnok on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Tarnok, 25, entered this season ranked as Oakland’s 13th-best prospect by MLB.com. He began the year on the 15-day injured list with right hip inflammation before being transferred to the 60-day IL on May 3. Tarnok made six rehab appearances (1 start) with triple-A Las Vegas (7.1 IP) in May.

Originally selected by the Atlanta Braves in the third round of the 2017 MLB Draft, the Brandon, Fla., native made his major league debut for the Braves in his lone appearance of 2022. After being traded to the Athletics on Dec. 12, 2022, as part of a three-team, nine-player deal, Tarnok posted a 4.91 ERA (8 ER, 14.2 IP) with 14 strikeouts in five games (1 start) for Oakland during the 2023 season. The 6-foot-3 righty is 19-26 with a 4.10 ERA (185 ER, 406.1 IP), 169 walks and 436 strikeouts across 110 career minor league games (85 starts).

Covey, 32, started the season on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. He was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 20, 2023, after originally being selected by the Athletics in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft.
