Phillies announce roster moves
The Phillies made the following roster moves today:
- Agreed to terms on a contract for the 2025 season with right-hander José Ruiz and catcher Garrett Stubbs
- Tendered contracts to five arbitration-eligible players: infielders Alec Bohm, Edmundo Sosa & Bryson Stott, outfielder Brandon Marsh and left-hander Ranger Suárez
- The club did not tender a contract to outfielder Austin Hays
Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcements.
Ruiz, 30, appeared in 52 games for the Phillies last season after attending major league spring training as a non-roster invitee. He posted a 3.71 ERA (21 ER, 51.0 IP) with a career-best 45.2 percent ground ball rate which ranked third among all Phillies relief pitchers (min. 50.0 IP), behind only Orion Kerkering (53.5%) and José Alvarado (46.0%). After beginning the season with triple-A Lehigh Valley, Ruiz had his contract selected on May 3 and remained with the club for the duration of the season. He did not allow an earned run in 40 of his 52 appearances, and following the All-Star break, posted a 1.99 ERA (5 ER, 22.2 IP) in 25 games. He was originally signed by the San Diego Padres as an amateur free agent in 2011.
Stubbs, 31, made his third consecutive Opening Day roster with the Phillies in 2024 and appeared in a career-high 56 regular season games. He also set career highs in hits (34) and walks (17), while tying previous marks in doubles (4) and triples (1). Defensively, he made 47 starts behind the plate and averaged a 1.88-second pop time to second base which ranked in the 92nd percentile per Statcast and was tied for the fourth fastest among all major league catchers (min. 20 attempts). He was originally an eighth-round selection of the Houston Astros in the 2015 MLB Draft.
