Instant classic! Phils even NLDS on Castellanos' walk-off knock

October 6th, 2024

PHILADELPHIA -- hung in there.

He got booed and Bronx cheered in the fourth inning in Sunday’s 7-6 walk-off victory over the Mets in Game 2 of the NL Division Series. He shook his head in the moment. But then he followed 's two-run homer in the sixth with a game-tying homer. He singled and scored the go-ahead run on Bryson Stott's triple in the eighth.

Then, after the Phillies had blown the lead in the ninth, Castellanos ripped a two-out single to left field to win it.

"It was incredible, but the series is even," Castellanos said postgame. "We go to New York and there’s a lot of baseball left. As soon as we can, turn the page and focus on Game 3.”

Castellanos just might have saved the Phillies' season at that moment, giving them hope they can still win the NLDS. Teams that have fallen behind 2-0 in a best-of-five series in MLB history have come back to win only 11 percent of the time. But in the current 2-2-1 Division Series format with the series tied after two games, teams that play Games 3-4 on the road have won 33 percent of the time.

The Phillies will take those odds, especially with Aaron Nola on the mound in Game 3 at Citi Field.

"Punch for punch the whole game. That’s a great team over there," Harper said on the field postgame. "They’re playing ball well right now. I thought [Luis Severino] threw it well also. But we kept in it. Big swing by Bryson Stott to get us ahead right there and then obviously Casty coming up in that situation, big knock for him to win us that game.

"That’s a big win going 1-1 to New York. I expect that to be a pretty hostile environment. We’re looking forward to that. A lot of fun.”

Phillies left-hander Matt Strahm allowed a two-run home run to Mark Vientos with one out in the ninth inning to tie the game.

It was only the second homer he had allowed since July 30, and his first since Sept. 3.
