Harper maintains high April OBP
Phillies slugger tied for fourth all time in season's first month
WASHINGTON -- Nationals fans might want to rethink booing Bryce Harper.
Or maybe it’s just his time of year.
Harper reached base in each of his five plate appearances Wednesday afternoon in the Phillies' 9-8 loss to Washington at Nationals Park. He was intentionally walked and scored in the first inning. He walked in the third, singled in the fifth, singled in the seventh and was intentionally walked again in the eighth. Following his memorable performance Tuesday night, which included a single, double and home run, Harper has reached base in eight consecutive plate appearances.
"It's impressive," Phillies ace Aaron Nola said. "It really is. To come into his old ballpark and do what he did and do what he did in Citizens Bank … our hitters in general have just been off the charts. I mean, they cleaned up the mess that I made today. I gave up six and they answered right back. What else can we ask from them? They've been solid so far. I think they're going to continue being solid."
Harper continues to crush the baseball in March and April. Through Wednesday’s game, Harper is batting .315/.443/.636 with 33 doubles, three triples, 44 home runs, 117 RBIs, 120 runs scored, 129 walks and a 1.079 OPS in 670 career plate appearances in March/April.
Harper’s .443 on-base percentage in March/April is tied for fourth all-time with Rogers Hornsby. Only Ted Williams (.483), Babe Ruth (.452) and Jimmie Foxx (.450) are better. His .633 slugging percentage ranks second only to Ruth’s .638.
Harper's OPS ranks third to Ruth (1.089) and Williams (1.088).
Since 2013, Harper ranks first in baseball in March/April in home runs, walks and runs scored. He is second in extra-base hits (79) to Mike Trout, second in RBIs to Nelson Cruz and second in times on base to Paul Goldschmidt.
