MIAMI -- After returning to South Florida following their West Coast road trip, the Marlins jumped back into action. Reliever JT Chargois and third baseman Jake Burger, alongside “Mr. Marlin” Jeff Conine, general manager Kim Ng, Billy the Marlin and volunteers from the Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation and PNC Bank, kicked off the back-to-school season by hosting the first of eight school supply distributions on Friday.

Chargois, Burger and Co. handed out a plethora of supplies -- including pencils, notebooks, folders, safety scissors, glue sticks, crayons, rulers, markers, composition books and paper -- at Kensington Park Elementary School.

Burger, who was acquired by the Marlins ahead of the Trade Deadline, has already made big contributions to the club on the field. He’s slashed .347/.410/.507 in 20 games since the trade and has been a big asset to Miami’s infield. But for Burger, being an active member of his new community is just as important.

“That's kind of how my wife and I have always viewed the job I do,” Burger said. “It's more than just playing baseball. It's helping the community and helping any way we can. So any sort of thing like this, [pretty much] anything to help the community, we’re always on board for.

“When I was growing up, I remember this time of the year and being really excited to go back to school with my friends, so it's just awesome helping as many kids as we're helping. … It’s cool to have this community and be able to have situations like this where we can meet members of the community and help out in any way we can.”

Through the eight distribution events, the Marlins and their partners will deliver school supplies to more than 10,000 elementary school students in Miami-Dade County and Palm Beach County as part of the club’s dedication to the growth of the communities’ future leaders and “All-Star students.”

“[We] come back from California, have two big series at home against the Nationals and Rays,” Burger said. “[I’m] excited to get into the series, but obviously, I’d rather help the community first and get the good vibes going before we take on the Nationals.”
