Giants acquire OF Mark Canha from Tigers

July 30th, 2024

The Giants acquired outfielder from the Tigers in exchange for right-hander Eric Silva before Tuesday's Trade Deadline.

The club also announced it has recalled infielder Marco Luciano (the team's No. 3-ranked prospect) and catcher Blake Sabol from Triple-A.

While 2024 has seen some of Canha’s lowest production numbers in years, including a .231 average and .687 OPS, the 35-year-old remains a valuable player in the right matchups, usually against left-handed pitching. He pounded southpaws for a .286 average and .857 OPS while playing in an everyday role, which seemingly wore him down at times. He showed improvement at the plate in July after taking time off to work on his swing and rest a lingering issue in his hip. He showed some positional versatility, playing both outfield corners as well as regular duty at first base after Spencer Torkelson was optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

For the matchups and the contract, Canha is an ideal rental player for a playoff run. He’s in the final season of a three-year deal he signed with the Mets before the 2022 season. He has been traded three times in two years, going to Milwaukee at last year’s Deadline and then to Detroit at the start of last offseason.
