Giants snag a pair of prospects at 2024 Deadline

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants acquired a pair of promising young prospects leading up to Tuesday’s 3 p.m. PT Trade Deadline.

Here’s a rundown of what you need to know about the newest members of the Giants system.

Sabin Ceballos, INF, High-A Eugene
Pipeline scouting report: A bit under the radar as a high schooler in Puerto Rico, Ceballos first extended his amateur career at San Jacinto Junior College, where he raked for two years and got taken on Day 3 of the 2022 Draft by the Angels. He decided to head west to Oregon and climbed to the third round, when the Braves took him on the heels of his .333/.426/.643 line with 18 homers for the Ducks. He continued to hit well, albeit without that kind of power (.300/.440/.375) during his 14-game pro debut.

Since his San Jac days, Ceballos has shown a knack for making contact. In 2023, he improved his approach considerably, drawing a lot more walks -- which helped him get to his power more, mostly to his pull side -- and he absolutely punishes fastballs. The plate discipline carried over during his pro debut as well, and he should be able to drive the ball to all fields.

Ceballos has a strong arm and decent hands, both of which give him a shot to stay at third, which is where he played during his debut. His lack of range, however, has some evaluators thinking he might need to move to first, and there’s always the intriguing possibility of trying him behind the plate, where he played some during his Draft League stint in 2022.

Organizational fit: The Giants don’t have any third basemen on their current list of Top 30 Prospects, so Ceballos should help provide much-needed depth at the position. The 21-year-old Puerto Rican was ranked the Braves’ No. 17 prospect before being dealt to the Giants as part of the return for Jorge Soler and Luke Jackson.

Jacob Bresnahan, LHP, Single-A San Jose
Organizational fit: Bresnahan, 19, was a 13th-round Draft pick of the Guardians in 2023 and has recorded a 2.70 ERA with 66 strikeouts over 50 innings in 12 starts between the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and Single-A Lynchburg this year. The Giants have proved adept at developing young arms, so perhaps they can unlock something else in Bresnahan and help raise his stock even further in the years to come.
