Cain has surgery to remove bone spur in ankle
Two-month recovery for Giants righty, already out with elbow procedure
SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants right-hander Matt Cain underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle Saturday morning to remove a bone spur, the club announced.
Cain already was sidelined by surgery to remove bone spurs and chips from his throwing elbow, a procedure that was performed Aug. 11. The three-time All-Star was expected to begin a throwing program in December. That timetable should remain intact, given the two-month recovery period the Giants cited for Cain's ankle surgery.
"We expect him to be ready for Spring Training," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Cain, a three-time All-Star. "He had to get this taken care of. It's been bothering him a little bit."
Cain's ankle was operated on by Dr. Ken Akizuki, the team's head orthopedist, and Dr. Larry Oloff, team podiatrist, in San Francisco.
Until this year, Cain, who turns 30 on Wednesday, had remained a durable performer for the Giants, starting at least 30 games in each of the previous eight seasons. He finished 2014 with a 2-7 record and a 4.18 ERA in 15 starts.
