SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants observed the first true day of the Major League offseason with predictable moves: exercising options on the 2019 contracts of Madison Bumgarner and Pablo Sandoval.
Bumgarner, San Francisco's ace, has pitched under the terms of a club-friendly deal that will pay him $12 million in 2019. That's the final season of a five-year, $35 million extension he signed in April 2012.
Bumgarner's contract status already has generated considerable speculation. The Giants must decide whether to retain the left-hander for the entire 2019 campaign or trade him and lose the Draft-pick compensation they'd receive if he signed with another team as a free agent after finishing '19 with the Giants.
Bumgarner, 29, endured an injury-marred season but also a mostly effective one. He posted a 6-7 record with a 3.26 ERA in 21 starts, highlighted by a streak of 22 consecutive scoreless innings at AT&T Park from Aug. 7-Sept. 28. He began the season on the disabled list after he was hit by a line drive during the Giants' Cactus League finale. That forced him to miss the first two months of the season with a displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal on his left hand.
Sandoval will earn $17 million in a deal that he reached with Boston in free agency following the 2014 season. The Giants expect Sandoval to serve as a backup at the infield corners.
Last season, Sandoval appeared in 92 games and hit .248 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs. The utility man saved his best for clutch situations, batting .323 (20-for-62) with 30 RBIs with runners in scoring position. He also batted .286 (8-for-28) as a pinch-hitter.

Sandoval, whose season ended in late July with a right hamstring strain, was among five Giants who were reinstated from the 60-day disabled list. The others were catcher Buster Posey (right hip) and right-handers Jeff Samardzija (shoulder), Johnny Cueto (elbow) and Julian Fernandez (UCL sprain).
The Giants have 36 players on their 40-man roster.
