SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants’ instructional league ended on an unfortunate note for outfield prospect Alexander Canario, who dislocated his left shoulder in the final week of play and had surgery to repair a torn labrum.

The procedure was performed by team orthopedist Dr. Ken Akizuki. Canario, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Giants’ No. 7 prospect, has been discharged and will return to Arizona to begin his rehab.

Canario’s injury could impact the Giants’ upcoming 40-man roster decisions. If the 20-year-old isn’t added to the club’s 40-man roster by Friday, he will be eligible to be taken by 29 other teams during the Rule 5 Draft, which will be held on Dec. 10.

Canario seemed to be a lock to be added before the injury. His setback could complicate matters for the Giants, who have 39 players on their 40-man roster and likely will have to do some trimming ahead of the deadline Friday. Other Rule 5 Draft-eligible prospects, such as right-handers Camilo Doval, Tyler Cyr and Gregory Santos and catcher Ricardo Genoves, could be in the mix for a roster spot.

Signed out of the Dominican Republic for $60,000 in 2016, Canario has been viewed as one of the more underrated prospects in the Giants’ system. He had a .318/.377/.623 slash line with 16 home runs in 59 games between the Arizona Rookie League and the club’s Class A Short Season affiliate in Salem-Keizer in ’19. Canario earned a spot in the Giants’ 60-man player pool this summer and continued to impress during instructional league this fall.
