This prospect can't stop hitting

“If you’re ready, it doesn’t matter how old you are.”
D-backs hitting coach Joe Mather said he recently heard that quote in reference to Corbin Carroll, the 22-year-old outfielder who has raked his way through Arizona’s Minor League system and could soon be in the conversation for a big league callup. He’s young, but he may be close to ready.
However, Mather then applied that quote to a player whose age may have kept him out of top-prospect conversations -- 26-year-old outfielder Stone Garrett, who was called up by Arizona last week and made his long-awaited MLB debut on Aug. 17 in San Francisco. Since then, Garrett is 6-for-15 with three doubles, three runs scored and an RBI in his first four big league games.
It wasn’t an easy path for Garrett. He struggled for much of his time in the Marlins’ Minor League system from 2014-19, before he used LinkedIn to get back into baseball in ‘21, when he ended up getting connected to D-backs scout Brett West.
Despite Garrett not having much success before coming to Arizona’s system, Mather hasn’t been surprised by what he’s seen lately from the slugger, who had 28 homers for Triple-A Reno this year before his promotion.
“He’s a big kid, so I’m guessing that the power was in there somewhere with Miami,” Mather said. “Fortunately, we got him when it seemed to take hold for him. You never know when it does for guys, and again, [West] did a great job, because the makeup is there. The strength is obviously there.”
