PITTSBURGH -- Trevor Rosenthal will seek a second opinion on his ailing right elbow from Dr. Neal ElAttrache next week before the Cardinals determine whether the right-handed reliever will require surgery to repair a compromised ligament.
John Mozeliak, president of baseball operations, said the Cardinals will refrain from drawing any conclusions about the severity of the injury until they receive the results of that visit.
"Clearly, there are a lot of different things that could happen," Mozeliak said. "It could be rest, or it could end up as a surgical procedure. We'll take this slowly and make sure we understand what all the alternatives look like and what looks best for him."
The decision to send Rosenthal out for a second look came after the right-hander met with Cardinals team doctor George Paletta on Thursday. Mozeliak confirmed that there is concern about the integrity of the ulnar collateral ligament.
St. Louis placed Rosenthal, who recently reclaimed his job as closer, on the 10-day disabled list on Thursday with what was described as right posterior elbow irritation. The move followed an eight-pitch appearance on Wednesday in which he saw a sharp decrease in velocity and had erratic command.

Wong scratched from lineup
The Cardinals removed second baseman Kolten Wong from the lineup about two hours before first pitch on Friday after he reported feeling discomfort around his hip. The move was described by both Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny as precautionary, and Wong was expected to be available off the bench.
"The trainers wanted to just get ahead of it and give him a day here to where he can hopefully feel better physically so he can keep doing what he's been doing lately," Matheny said of Wong, who is slashing .311/.398/.447 on the season. "He felt it a little bit yesterday when he was in the game, and it was a little bit tight when he got here today."
Siegrist progressing in St. Louis
Reliever Kevin Siegrist threw his second bullpen session this week without issue at Busch Stadium on Thursday. Mozeliak said that he heard it went well and that Siegrist will repeat the exercise on Sunday. It has not yet been determined if Siegrist will follow the work with a Minor League rehab assignment.
Siegrist has been on the DL with left forearm tendinitis retroactive to Aug. 4.
Minor Leaguer receives suspension
Catcher Tyler Lancaster, on the roster of the Cardinals' Class A Short-Season State College (Pa.) club, received a 76-game suspension without pay after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
Lancaster, a 16th-round selection in the 2016 Draft, hit .255/.360/.372 in 29 games with State College.
