CHICAGO -- Shortly before the start of the Cardinals' series opener against the White Sox on Tuesday, outfielder Tommy Pham was scratched from the lineup with a left ankle contusion, two days after fouling a ball off the ankle and leaving during the seventh inning of a game against the Giants.
X-rays taken Sunday on Pham's ankle came back negative. Pham had been slated to play center field and hit second. He was replaced by Yairo Munoz, who batted eighth.
Pham is hitting .246/.331/.405 with 13 home runs. Munoz, making his first career appearance in center field, entered Tuesday hitting .288/.344/.425 with five homers.
Gregerson's injury an 'annoyance'
Right-hander Luke Gregerson isn't ready to be activated off the disabled list, but he has joined the Cardinals for the two-game series against the White Sox in Chicago.
Gregerson pitched in consecutive games for the first time on his rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Sunday and Monday. That assignment could end soon, now that he is with the team.
"Physically, I feel pretty good," Gregerson said. "I've been getting a lot of positive results on the mound. I'm pretty much where I need to be."
Gregerson went on the DL on May 16 with a shoulder impingement, but he then underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on June 11, which set him back about an additional 4-6 weeks.
Having two injuries in his first season on a new contract has been a challenge, Gregerson said. He added that he doesn't like the impression his injury has left, but feels confident that his track record speaks for itself.
"I feel like every time I get a step ahead, something pulls me backward further, so it's been a bit of a snowball effect that I just couldn't get ahead of," Gregerson said. "It's been a bit of a challenge this year for the first time in my career. It's a little bit of an annoyance and grind, two in one season, so it's a work in progress."
All-Star Mikolas likely to pitch over the weekend
The Cardinals have not set their rotation for their weekend series against the Reds, but manager Mike Matheny hinted that Miles Mikolas, who started Tuesday's series opener against the White Sox, could start Sunday's finale.
That start would prevent Mikolas from pitching in next Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard (6:30 p.m. CT on FOX), in which Mikolas earned his first berth. He was the only Cardinals player to make the National League roster before Yadier Molina was added as an injury replacement on Monday night.
Lyons' rehab not far behind Gregerson
Left-hander Tyler Lyons has been dealing with a left elbow sprain and has been on the disabled list since June 8. But Matheny said Tuesday that Lyons' rehab is not far behind Gregerson.
"I don't think too far, but still just trying to get a little more repetitions," Matheny said. "Luke's been able to throw a little bit more than Tyler. Luke was trying to get some lower extremity stuff taken care of, so his arm was really on track. He's had a nice rehab, so Tyler's taking some good progress forward."
Lyons is currently on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis.

• The Cardinals will have three players representing the organization in the upcoming Dominican Summer League All-Star Game. Center fielder Joerlin De Los Santos, shortstop Sander Mora and right-hander Martin Cordova were recently named to the squad.
• Cardinals strength and conditioning coach Pete Prinzi has been invited to serve in that same role for the National League All-Star team.
