Rally Squirrel makes on-field cameo in St. Louis
After a five-year hiatus, a Rally Squirrel emerged yet again at a Cardinals game.
In the seventh inning of a tie game between the Cardinals and Tigers at Busch Stadium on Saturday, the action was temporarily halted due to a furry friend making a dash across the diamond.
Just as Tigers pitcher Will Vest was ready to throw his next pitch to the Cardinals’ Lars Nootbaar, the Rally Squirrel sprinted and stopped behind the mound. A few brief pauses and possible poses for the cameras ensued before the squirrel sprinted up the right-field line and to the tarp near the stands.
Ironically enough, the Rally Squirrel’s last appearance came during a Cardinals-Tigers game at Comerica Park late in 2018. First appearing for the Cardinals in Game 4 of the 2011 National League Division Series against the Phillies, the Rally Squirrel has become St. Louis’ unofficial mascot and rallying cry.
While unsuccessful in helping the Cards to a victory on Saturday like it did in previous attempts, one can’t fault this little critter for trying to steal the show and get St. Louis’ season back on track.
