C-Mart, Gyorko among 5 put on injured list
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The AutoZone Park afternoon was cloudy and brisk, but Cardinals manager Mike Shildt got a couple of pieces of news from back in Jupiter, Fla., that warmed his bones a touch.
“Good report today from Minor League camp on [Jedd Gyorko],” Shildt said before the Cardinals’ exhibition game against the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds.
Gyorko was one of five players put on the 10-day injured list by the Cardinals on Monday, but he is expected to be back sooner rather than later after missing the last few weeks of Spring Training with a right calf strain.
“He got in four at-bats, was moving around well doing baserunning stuff,” Shildt said. “I imagine we’ll see him with the club in Pittsburgh [next week], though he won’t be eligible to come off the [IL] until the home opener April 4 [against the Padres].”
Carlos Martinez has started a throwing program after being shut down for a right shoulder rotator cuff strain.
“Carlos is a month to a month and half away, to where we can evaluate where he is and how we want him to progress,” Shildt said of Martinez, who could head to the rotation or the back half of the bullpen.
Shildt said that reliever Luke Gregerson (right shoulder impingement) is “starting to make strides” but that lefty reliever Brett Cecil (left hand Carpal Tunnel syndrome) “is going to be a while.”
Outfielder Justin Williams, who finished last year on Memphis’ roster after being obtained from the Rays, is still recovering from a right hand second metacarpal fracture he sustained punching a television in January. He was cleared to resume swinging a bat two weeks ago.
Though not on the injured list, third baseman Matt Carpenter missed the last few spring games with back tightness, and he stayed back in Florida to get in extra work on the back fields.
“Carp had five ABs, a couple of hits and a walk … real shocker,” Shildt said with a grin.
