June 19th, 2024

ST. LOUIS, Mo., June 18, 2024 – The St. Louis Cardinals organization mourns the loss of Hall of Famer Willie Mays, whose remarkable talent and larger-than-life personality captivated the hearts of fans across the country. His contributions to the baseball community are immeasurable and his legacy as a true icon of the game will endure forever.

The news of his passing in the lead up to Thursday’s MLB at Rickwood Field: A Tribute to the Negro Leagues game is especially heartbreaking, as members of our organization spent today in Willie’s hometown of Birmingham, Alabama celebrating his impact both on and off the field at the very place where he first started his baseball career as a teenager with the Negro American League’s Birmingham Black Barons.

Our heartfelt sympathies are with the Mays family, his many friends, and the San Francisco Giants organization during this difficult time.
