Alvarez, Hiura nab Rookie of the Month honors
Yordan Alvarez and Keston Hiura have been named the American League and National League Rookies of the Month, respectively. It’s the second straight month that Alvarez has won the award, also doing so in June. It’s Hiura’s first monthly rookie honor.
Hiura is the first Brewers rookie to be Rookie of the Month since Casey McGehee in September 2009.
Alvarez hit .333 in July with a .627 slugging percentage, knocking five homers and totaling 15 RBIs. One of those homers was an Astros’ Statcast-era record 474-foot homer on July 19.
Hiura led all NL rookies with at least 50 PAs with a .355 batting average, .429 OBP and .699 slugging percentage. He hit six homers -- tied for second-most among NL rookies in July -- with 18 RBIs, which led the group. He also hit 10 doubles, which was four more than any other NL rookie in July.
