Injuries & Moves: Turner returns; Barger optioned

LATEST NEWS

July 6: DH (paternity list) activated; 3B/RF optioned to Triple-A
The Blue Jays could have chosen to option outfielder Steward Berroa, who has seen sparse playing time, but wanted to get Barger more playing time in Triple-A. Toronto's No. 6 prospect has struggled with a .150 average and .360 OPS over 20 games in the big leagues this season, but could still be part of the club's future in 2025 and beyond, so this will be an opportunity for him to reset and potentially return after the Trade Deadline.

Turner and his wife, Kourtney, had a baby boy Friday and he flew from Toronto on Saturday morning to join the team in Seattle.

July 5: RHP (right ulnar nerve neuritis) to begin rehab assignment Saturday
García threw a 21-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and came out of it feeling strong, so the next step is a rehab game in Triple-A Buffalo, which is scheduled for Saturday.

There's still a scenario where García could only need one rehab outing and return to the Blue Jays comfortably before the break, but if he needs a second, that would likely line up on Tuesday. Along with helping this bullpen, García could be one of the top rental relievers available at the July 30 Trade Deadline.

July 3: RHP (right elbow impingement) underwent arthroscopic surgery
Following his visit with Dr. Keith Meister, Romano underwent this procedure to repair the impingement. While this is better news than ligament damage to Romano's elbow, there's still nothing positive about an elbow procedure, as this will shut him down from throwing for at least six weeks.

The Blue Jays will evaluate Romano over the coming weeks, but by the time he's ready to throw again, the context of their season could be a factor, too, in how aggressive they are ramping him back up. The Blue Jays aren't closing the door on a return by the end of 2024, but that's a conversation they'll revisit a month from now, following the July 30 Trade Deadline.

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP (right ulnar nerve neuritis)
Expected return: Mid-July
García threw a 21-pitch bullpen session on July 3 is now scheduled to make a Triple-A rehab appearance on July 6. Afterward, the Blue Jays will determine whether he needs a second or is ready to return to the Major League squad. (Last updated: July 5)

LHP (left ulnar nerve inflammation; No. 1 on Blue Jays' Top 30 Prospects list)
Expected return: Early July
The Blue Jays' No. 1 prospect had another excellent rehab outing with Single-A Dunedin on July 3, allowing just one run over 3 2/3 innings with six strikeouts over 65 pitches. Manager John Schneider said on July 4 that Tiedemann could move back to Triple-A for his next start, but that is still being determined. Once there, Tiedemann could be a few hot starts -- or a couple of trades -- away from being considered for his big league debut later this season. (Last updated: July 4)

RHP (right elbow impingement, arthroscopic surgery)
Expected return:
Potentially by end of 2024
Romano's elbow wasn't "bouncing back" as well as he'd hoped, and initial tests revealed inflammation. Romano tried to ramp back up twice, but his elbow was not cooperating and a visit to Dr. Keith Meister ended with Romano undergoing arthroscopic surgery to repair an impingement in that elbow. Romano will now be shut down from throwing for at least six weeks, at which point the Blue Jays will evaluate the best path forward. For now, they are now considering this a season-ending injury, but a return remains a real possibility. (Last updated: July 3)

UTIL (left knee sprain)
Expected return:
Potentially late July to early August
Kiner-Falefa felt something in his knee while stretching on July 1 and was a surprise, last-minute scratch from that day's lineup. Tests revealed a sprain and the Blue Jays are considering this a "week to week" issue, so while it's difficult to nail down a timeline right now, he'll need more than the minimum 10 days.

The urgency of Kiner-Falefa's rehab and return in the later stages of that process could also depend on where the Blue Jays are in late July and through the July 30 Trade Deadline, if this stretches on that long. We can expect to have a clearer picture of that by mid-July. (Last updated: July 2)

RHP (right UCL surgery)
Expected return:
2025
Manoah underwent successful right UCL reconstructive surgery with an internal brace on June 17 and is expected to rejoin the Blue Jays in Toronto soon. Manoah left his start on May 29 after feeling a "pinchy" sensation in his right elbow. He was "guarding" his elbow earlier in that start, but the discomfort arose when he began to fully extend his elbow through pitches. (Last updated: June 18)

60-DAY INJURED LIST

LHP (Tommy John surgery, No. 4 on Blue Jays' Top 30 prospects list)
Expected return: 2025
Barriera's agent announced in late April that the 20-year-old lefty had undergone Tommy John surgery with an internal brace to repair a Grade 2 UCL tear and was placed on the Minor League season-ending injured list. The Blue Jays' No. 4 prospect will miss the rest of the 2024 season and likely part of the 2025 season, though that timeline should be clearer early next year.

This is another difficult setback for the Blue Jays' first-round pick from 2022. Barriera was shut down after the Draft that year, dealt with injuries in 2023 and is now done for '24, leaving him with just 21 2/3 pro innings under his belt. Barriera had impressed in camp and was touching 97 mph regularly, but for now, he'll focus on the rehab process and attempt to come back strong in his age-21 season. (Last updated: May 17)
