Stripling felt his back "lock up" during the A's 4-3 victory over the Astros on Tuesday night, leading to his placement on the 15-day IL on Wednesday, retroactive to Monday. The A's are hopeful that he could return before the end of the season, though they will monitor how he feels over the next few days before making that determination.

Muller returns for another stint with Oakland this season. After being designated for assignment on Aug. 13 and clearing waivers, the left-hander was assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas, where he went 1-1 with a 4.43 ERA in four games (three starts). Muller is expected to fill a long relief role in the A's bullpen.

O'Loughlin was designated for assignment to clear a spot for Muller on the 40-man roster.

RHP (lower back strain)
Expected return: Late September
Stripling felt his back "lock up" during the A's 4-3 victory over the Astros on Sept. 10. With his IL placement retroactive to Sept. 9, the A's are hopeful the veteran right-hander could return when first eligible on Sept. 24.

“He says it’s happened to him in the past and generally takes four or five days to settle down," manager Mark Kotsay said. "It’s real unfortunate timing for him toward the end of the year. We’re hopeful that he can finish the season [with us]. We want to try to give him every opportunity to do that.” (Last updated: Sept. 11)
