Abusive Fan Behavior - Use of Derogatory Language

The Athletics are committed to creating a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable environment for our fans, players, coaches, and staff. We will not tolerate the use of derogatory or offensive language about a person’s race, ethnicity, gender, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation, or national origin at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The Athletics will take the following steps to ensure that our environment is inclusive and welcoming:

  1. Ballpark Signage. We will post signage informing fans that the Oakland Athletics will not tolerate the use of derogatory or offensive language.
  2. Video Address. We will run a video at the beginning of all home games that addresses fan safety and informs fans that the Oakland Athletics will not tolerate the use of derogatory or offensive language.
  3. Online Notification. We will include in our Code of Conduct, which is posted in the ballpark and online, a statement that the Athletics will not tolerate the use of derogatory or offensive language.
  4. Text Notification System. We will offer a text notification system that fans can use to text any concerns about the use of derogatory or offensive language to Athletics staff. Information about the text notification system will be posted prominently in the ballpark. We will also mention the text notification system in public address announcements before and during all home games.
  5. Annual Training. We will train all day-of-game employees annually on responding to derogatory or offensive language. Such training will be documented.
  6. Incident Escalation Path. We will train all day-of-game employees to inform the security supervisor of any incident involving the use of offensive or derogatory language. Security supervisors will notify law enforcement located at the ballpark, as needed, through the existing dispatch system.
  7. Incident Logging. We will log incidents regarding the use of derogatory or offensive language in our electronic incident report system.
  8. Reports to Management. All incident logs will be sent automatically to the Vice President of Stadium Operations, who will review the reports and notify the President and General Counsel of any incidents involving ejection, notification of law enforcement, or public outrage.
  9. Discipline. We will take appropriate disciplinary measures in response to the use of derogatory or offensive language in the ballpark. We reserve the right to issue warnings, eject fans from the ballpark, and/or engage law enforcement, as needed. The disciplinary measures we elect will depend on the nature and severity of the language used, the level of disruption caused by the language, and other circumstantial factors.
