Yankees acquire RHP Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz
The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired minor league right-handed pitcher Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and international signing bonus pool money from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for catcher Carlos Narváez.
Rodriguez-Cruz, 21, combined to go 5-5 with a 2.91 ERA (89.2IP, 65H, 39R/29ER, 43BB, 102K, 5HR) in 21 games (20 starts) with Single-A Salem (14G/13GS) and High-A Greenville (7GS) in 2024. The right-handed pitcher was named the Carolina League “Pitcher of the Month” for June with Salem after allowing 2R/0ER in 20.0IP over four starts. Following the season, Rodriguez-Cruz was named a Low Class-A All-Star with Salem by Baseball America.
Over three minor league seasons in the Red Sox organization (2022-24), Rodriguez-Cruz has gone 11-11 with a 2.60 ERA (183.1IP, 139H, 79R/53ER, 85BB, 195K, 9HR) in 48 games (44 starts). The Trujillo Alto, P.R., native was originally selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft out of Leadership Chrisitan Academy (P.R.).
Narváez, 26, saw his first Major League action in 2024, hitting .231 (3-for-13) with 2BB in six games with the Yankees. The right-handed batter spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, batting .254 (85-for-335) with 54R, 20 doubles, 11HR, 58RBI, 56BB and 9SB in 96 games. Over eight minor league seasons in the Yankees organization (2016-19, ‘21-24), Narváez hit .250 (422-for-1,689) with 257R, 78 doubles, 2 triples, 47HR, 237RBI, 277BB and 23SB in 496 games. The Maracay, Venezuela, native was re-signed by the Yankees to a minor league contract on October 21, 2022. He was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2015.
