Yankees protect four from Rule 5 Draft
NEW YORK -- The Yankees made several moves on Friday, adding right-handers Roansy Contreras, Yoendrys Gomez and Alexander Vizcaíno and infielder Oswald Peraza to the Major League roster at the deadline for protection from the Rule 5 Draft.
Contreras is ranked as the organization's No. 19 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. During the 2019 season, Contreras led the Yankees' Minor League organization and the South Atlantic League in wins, going 12-5 with a 3.33 ERA in 24 starts with Class A Charleston. Contreras was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2016.
In the last three seasons, Gomez, ranked as the team's No. 9 prospect, made 35 appearances in the Minor Leagues and was 8-9 with a 3.69 ERA. In 2019, Gomez made 12 starts and was 4-5 with a 3.99 ERA while playing for Rookie-level Pulaski and Class A Charleston. Gomez was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2016.
Vizcaíno, 23, is the No. 8-ranked prospect in the Yankees' organization. This past season, Vizcaíno was a non-roster invitee, part of the team’s 60-man pool and spent the season on the alternate site. In 2019, Vizcaíno went a combined 6-6 with a 4.38 ERA with Class A Charleston and Class A Advanced Tampa, recording 128 strikeouts in 115 innings in 21 starts. He ranked fourth among Yankees Minor Leaguers in strikeouts and was named a South Atlantic League All-Star with Charleston. He was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on May 18, 2016.
Peraza, 20, is the Yankees’ No. 4 prospect. In the last three seasons, Peraza hit .267 with five home runs, 65 RBIs and 44 stolen bases in 159 games. During the 2019 season, he hit a combined .263 with 38 runs scored, four home runs, 20 RBIs and 23 stolen bases in 65 games between Class A Short Season Staten Island and Class A Charleston. His 23 stolen bases were the third most among Yankees Minor Leaguers. Peraza was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2016.
The Rule 5 Draft will take place on Dec. 10.
