Yanks get lefty Peralta in swap with Giants
The Yankees moved to upgrade their already-dominant bullpen on Tuesday, acquiring left-hander Wandy Peralta and a player to be named later from the Giants in exchange for outfielder Mike Tauchman.
Peralta, 29, was 2-1 with two saves and a 5.40 ERA in 10 appearances for San Francisco this season. Over six Major League seasons with the Reds (2016-19) and Giants ('19-21), Peralta has gone 9-9 with two saves and a 4.72 ERA in 220 relief appearances.
“We're excited about Peralta,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “We think he can be an important member of our bullpen. We'll just see how the days unfold and how we start to integrate him.”
Boone said that Peralta will travel to Baltimore on Wednesday, though he is not expected to be active for Wednesday’s game against the Orioles. Peralta could be activated on Thursday.
In 2020, Peralta was 1-1 with a 3.29 ERA in 25 relief outings, holding left-handed batters to a .171 (7-for-41) opponents’ batting average with 12 strikeouts. He struck out at least one batter in 19 of his 25 games, averaging 8.23 strikeouts per nine innings.
According to Statcast, Peralta ranked among the Majors’ best in average exit velocity (85.6 mph), hard-hit percentage (30.3%) and barrel percentage (3.9%) last season -- trends that were continuing into 2021.
Tauchman, 30, had been used as a reserve outfielder and pinch-runner this season, batting .214 (3-for-14) with one double and one walk in 11 games with the Yankees in 2021.
In five Major League seasons with the Rockies (2017-18) and Yankees ('19-21), Tauchman has hit .250/.341/.411 with 13 home runs and 63 RBIs in 193 games.
“Hopefully for him, it's a situation that he goes out there and can help a Giants team that's off to a really good start,” Boone said. “I know they're getting a really good player. We saw what he did for us in ’19, and we know what kind of athlete and defender he is.”
Prior to Tuesday’s 5-1 win, the Yankees recalled infielder/outfielder Tyler Wade from the club’s alternate training site.
