NEW YORK -- The imposing power tandem of and flexed their muscles once again in the first inning on Tuesday, belting back-to-back home runs off Guardians left-hander Matthew Boyd.

Soto lifted a drive into the short right-field porch at Yankee Stadium for his 35th home run of the season, tying his career high. Five pitches later, Judge belted his Major League-leading 45th home run, a drive to right-center field, giving the Yankees a two-run lead before an eventual 9-5 loss in 12 innings.

Judge's home run was his 17th in the first inning this year, breaking Babe Ruth's record from 1927.

It marked the ninth time that the Yankees have hit consecutive homers this season, and the first since Aug. 14 at Chicago, when Judge and Austin Wells hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning.

According to the YES Network, it was the fifth time that Soto and Judge have hit consecutive homers this season, which ties for second in franchise history among teammates.

Only Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira did it more frequently (6), achieving that feat for the 2009 Yankees.

Other Yankees tandems to hit back-to-back homers five times: Ruth and Lou Gehrig (1927), Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio (1936), and Gary Sheffield and Alex Rodriguez (2005).
