Torres on IL, expected to be out 10-20 days
Gleyber Torres became the latest Yankees star to land on the injured list Monday after an MRI revealed a left thumb sprain, the team announced.
Torres hurt his thumb after diving into second base on a fourth-inning steal attempt in the Yanks’ 2-0 loss to the Mariners on Sunday at Yankee Stadium. Manager Aaron Boone said on Monday that he expects Torres to be out for approximately 10 to 20 days.
“I would say we got good news,” Boone said. “I think we were concerned that it was going to be more serious. The initial thought is 10 to 20 days, but realistically, we’ll have a better idea in the next couple of days. … I think we were kind of expecting the worst.”
Boone said that Torres remained in New York, where he will be seen by a specialist this week.
In corresponding moves, the Yankees recalled right-hander Nick Nelson and signed infielder Andrew Velazquez to a Major League contract, selecting him to the 26-man roster from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. A roster spot was open after right-hander Luis Gil was returned to Triple-A following his start on Sunday.
Torres’ performance had been improving after a slow start. He went 3-for-4 on Sunday, raising his batting line to .253/.328/.351. Torres has six homers and 42 RBIs in 99 games. He has hit .300/.337/.500 in 22 games since the All-Star break, with three homers and 13 RBIs.
The Yankees have established a franchise record with 41 injured-list stints this season. Torres is the eighth Yankee to hit the IL this month, joining right-handers Domingo Germán and Gerrit Cole, left-handers Jordan Montgomery and Aroldis Chapman, infielders Gio Urshela and Anthony Rizzo, and catcher Gary Sánchez.
“Even though we have a lot of really important key players down, we also have a lot of players that are capable of going out and playing at a very high level and winning games,” Boone said. “That is solely the focus.”
