Encarnacion to slot in as primary DH for Yankees
CHICAGO -- Not even 24 hours after their acquisition of three-time All-Star Edwin Encarnacion, the Yankees began contemplating scenarios to fit him into an already potent lineup.
Encarnacion comes to the Yankees with a lengthy resume as one of the game’s best power bats, leading the American League with 21 home runs and a healthy .888 OPS in 65 games with the Mariners this season.
“He fits in well. Obviously, a good hitter. He’ll probably become the primary DH, but he’s played a lot of first base and we feel he’s very capable over there as well,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said before Sunday’s 10-3 win over the White Sox. “Looking forward to adding him and adding more length to our lineup.”
Encarnacion is set to join the team Monday as New York starts a homestand against Tampa Bay. He will be available to play, according to Boone.
The return of Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees' lineup this week, the anticipated return of Aaron Judge shortly thereafter and the arrival of Encarnacion create a roster puzzle. Stanton was in Sunday's starting lineup for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and will get a scheduled day off Monday, and he's expected to be activated from the injured list prior to Tuesday’s matchup against the Rays.
With Encarnacion penciled in as the primary DH and both Judge and Stanton returning to their respective outfield corners, the player most affected is outfielder Clint Frazier, who is headed to Triple-A to make room on the 25-man roster for Encarnacion, Boone announced on Sunday. Brett Gardner and the injured Kendrys Morales may also find themselves fighting for playing time moving forward.
“We’ll still have some flexibility. Edwin will still get his occasional day off,” said Boone. “You could plug him in at first and give Luke [Voit] a day, so there will be some occasional turns in that DH spot. As the primary guy now, to get a guy of his caliber, I think is something that we’re excited about.”
