Bellingers the latest father-son duo in pinstripes
There’s a Bellinger back in the Bronx.
The Yankees acquired outfielder Cody Bellinger in a trade with the Cubs on Tuesday. He will be a big part of the Yanks’ 2025 attempt to win the franchise’s 28th World Series title.
The Bellinger family already has two World Series rings with the Yankees. Cody’s dad, Clay Bellinger, was a two-time champion with the Bronx Bombers. He wore the pinstripes from 1999-2001.
Clay hit 12 home runs and had a .623 OPS in 181 games with the Yankees. He was a member of the team that took down the Braves in the 1999 Fall Classic and was the Yankees’ left fielder when center fielder Bernie Williams secured the final out of the Subway Series in 2000.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Clay and Cody will be the fourth father-son duo to play for the Yankees, joining Yogi Berra (1946–63) and Dale Berra (1985-86), Ron Davis (1978–81) and Ike Davis (2016), and Mark Leiter (1990) and Mark Leiter Jr., who also moved from the Cubs to the Yankees in 2024. Leiter Jr. beat Cody Bellinger to the Bronx by several months as a Trade Deadline acquisition.
