Abreu, Cron named top players for August
Hard-hitting first basemen José Abreu of the Chicago White Sox and C.J. Cron of the Colorado Rockies have been named MLB’s American and National League Players of the Month presented by Chevrolet for August.
Abreu, who also won the American League Player of the Month Award in August 2020, led all AL hitters this August with 74 total bases spread across 28 games. He also ranked among the AL’s best in a number of offensive categories including home runs (10, tied for second), OPS (1.043, second), RBIs (25, tied for sixth) and runs scored (22, third).
The 34-year-old Cuban infielder is having another outstanding offensive season and leads the league with 102 RBIs in 127 games played. This marks the fourth time in his career that Abreu, the 2020 AL MVP, has been named Player of the Month.
Cron earned his first career National League Player of the Month Award following a dominant month of August in which he paced all NL hitters in batting average (.387), home runs (11), RBIs (34), OPS (1.291) and total bases (77).
The 31-year-old California native has been the driving force behind the Rockies offense this year, pacing the club in nearly every offensive category. He was also named NL Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Aug. 9 after recording two multihomer games with eight runs scored and 13 RBIs across just one weekend series.
