White Sox place Brennan on 40-man roster

The White Sox added right-handers Brandon Brennan and J.B. Wendelken to their 40-man roster, as Friday was the deadline to protect players from December's Rule 5 Draft.

Brennan, 24, and Wendelken, 22, both had their contracts purchased from Triple-A Charlotte. They also both participated in the Arizona Fall League this offseason. The White Sox now have 36 players on their 40-man roster.

Brennan, ranked as the club's No. 30 prospect by MLBPipeline.com, posted a 3.55 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 58 1/3 innings with Class A Advanced Winston-Salem last season after missing the start of the year due to a strained chest muscle. He also posted a 3.00 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 18 innings in the Arizona Fall League. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-hander was originally selected by the White Sox in the fourth round of the 2012 Draft.

Wendelken split his season between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte, posting a 3.20 ERA with 69 strikeouts and five saves in 59 innings. The right-handed reliever also pitched in four games in the Arizona Fall League, allowing nine runs in 2 2/3 innings. The 6-foot, 190-pounder was originally acquired by the White Sox in the three-team trade that sent Jake Peavy to the Red Sox.

Among those not protected from the Rule 5 Draft include left-hander Onelki Garcia, right-hander Myles Jaye and first baseman Keon Barnum. All three are ranked among the White Sox's Top 30 Prospects by MLBPipeline.com, as Garcia is ranked No. 22, Jaye is No. 25 and Barnum is No. 28. Garcia was already on Chicago's 40-man roster, but he was outrighted on April 3.
