Story feels good in return from injured list
Rockies shortstop logs single in loss to Marlins, says he's 'used to' trade rumors
The Rockies on Thursday activated Trevor Story from the 10-day injured list after optioning infielder Alan Trejo to Triple-A Albuquerque following Wednesday night’s game.
Story, a two-time All-Star who played shortstop and batted cleanup in an 11-4 loss to the Marlins in the series finale, logged a single in the top of the seventh inning for his first hit since May 27. Overall, he went 1-for-3 with a walk. He scored on Yonathan Daza's grounder in the seventh inning.
“I felt good. I know it was 11-12 days, but it felt like a long time,” Story said after the game. “It’s great to be back playing with the guys, having fun playing baseball.”
Story went on the IL with right elbow inflammation and has struggled at the plate this season, hitting .257 with five home runs and 23 RBIs entering Friday’s series opener against the Reds at Great American Ball Park.
“We didn’t want to put a hard date [on my return]. I felt good. I felt athletic. That’s what I’m trying to do when I’m out there,” Story said. “I’m not thinking about anything. I’m just trying to trust my preparation and let it play out.”
Now that he is healthy, Story will start hearing the trade rumors all over again. He is signed through 2021, and a lot of baseball experts believe he will be dealt before the Trade Deadline on July 31.
“The trade rumors have been going on for a while now. I've kind of gotten used to it,” Story said. “It’s something I don’t pay much attention to. A lot of other baseball people do. When it comes to me and what I need to do, [the rumors don't] help me do my job. I’m really focused on the day-to-day stuff. You hear a lot of stuff. I don’t pay much attention to it.”
Asked if he wants to stay with the Rockies, Story said, “We’ll see what happens. It’s tough for me to say right now, but we’ll see.”
