PHOENIX -- This past weekend, Nolan Arenado fouled a ball off his left big toe during the Rockies’ series against the Padres. And while it was sore, the third baseman played through the pain.

Until Thursday.

Arenado exited Colorado’s 6-4, 10-inning win over Arizona at Chase Field in the ninth inning due to precautionary reasons for his left big toe contusion. After getting X-rays over the weekend, he got more on Thursday. Both times, they were negative.

“I’ve just kind of been dealing with it, it’s been swollen, and icing it,” Arenado said. “It’s just swollen, it’s inflamed and it’s hurting. It’s just something I’m going to have to deal with, from what it sounds like.”

It’s unclear what Arenado’s status will be for this weekend’s series vs. the Dodgers in Los Angeles, but the third baseman’s toe was hurting enough that he couldn’t finish Thursday’s extra-inning game against the D-backs.

“I’m obviously a little concerned with it, but it’s just something I’ve got to deal with,” Arenado said.

While the Rockies continue to swing hot bats, it would be a big loss not to have Arenado in the lineup, especially with shortstop Trevor Story expected to miss several weeks with a right thumb sprain.
