Rockies acquire reliever Harvey from Yanks
DENVER -- The Rockies acquired righty reliever Joe Harvey from the Yankees for Minor League lefty Alfredo Garcia on Wednesday before the Trade Deadline.
Harvey, 27, debuted in the Majors this season and is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in nine games, with seven walks and 11 strikeouts. Harvey is 0-1 with a 3.12 ERA in 22 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Yankees chose Harvey in the 19th round of the 2014 Draft out of the University of Pittsburgh.
"In our estimation, [Harvey] has two plus pitches [fastball and hard slider] -- a younger guy on the roster who needs an opportunity to pitch," Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich said. "We had good numbers on him from an analytics perspective and good reports on him. The scouting and the numbers matched up in a lot of ways. We’re adding another power arm with potential."
Garcia, 20, who was signed out of Venezuela in 2016, was a combined 3-10 with a 6.00 ERA with 123 strikeouts and 45 walks at Class A Asheville and Class A Short-Season Boise.
To clear room on the 40-man roster, the Rockies designated left-hander Harrison Musgrave for assignment. Musgrave, 27, had a 3.60 ERA in 10 appearances before going to the 10-day injured list on May 4 with a left flexor tendon strain. He moved to the 60-day IL and was reinstated and sent to Triple-A Albuquerque on July 17. In parts of two seasons with the Rockies, Musgrave is 2-3 with a 4.45 ERA with 44 strikeouts and 29 walks in 54 2/3 innings.
The Rockies also acquired Minor League outfielder Jimmy Herron, a right-handed hitter, from the Cubs in exchange for international bonus pool money. Herron, 23, a third-round Draft pick out of Duke in 2018, was batting .220 with four home runs and 30 RBIs at Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach. He'll report to Class A Advanced Lancaster.
