DENVER -- Charlie Blackmon counts and appreciates his hits. But the idea he was setting a record by becoming the first player in Rockies history with three straight four-hit games hadn’t dawned on him.

“I didn’t know that’s a record,” Blackmon said after going 4-for-6 in the Rockies' 14-8 victory over the Padres on Saturday night at Coors Field. “I kind of feel like they made that one up.”

Actually, Blackmon is on such fire that records have to evolve to keep up with him.

Blackmon, hitting .332 with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs in 54 games as the Rockies’ primary leadoff hitter, became the first Major Leaguer to accomplish the four-in-three feat since the Dodgers’ Rafael Furcal from May 13-15, 2007.

“It’s a great feat,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “It shows the type of player Charlie is, the type of hitter he is. It’s hard to get one or two hits a game, and here he is getting four three nights in a row. It’s pretty special stuff.”

Blackmon singled off Padres starter Eric Lauer in each of the first two innings, then chased Lauer from the game with a third-inning double that gave the Rockies a 7-4 lead. His fourth hit, a bloop single to left field, came off reliever Robbie Erlin with one out in the fifth.

Blackmon was 4-for-5 against the Padres on Thursday in the series opener, including a triple and two home runs. On Friday, he was 4-for-7 with a double and a homer in the Rockies’ 12-inning loss to the Padres.

Before Blackmon’s big series, the last Rockies player with two straight four-hit games was DJ LeMahieu from June 15-16, 2017.

“I did a good job for a few at-bats, I hit ’em where they ain’t a little bit, and then I did a good job by hitting it just over the infielders' heads but not hard enough so it gets to the outfielders,” Blackmon said.

Blackmon’s success goes deeper than the series with the Padres, which concludes Sunday afternoon. During this homestand, which began with the Rockies taking two of three games from the Cubs, Blackmon is 18-for-31 (.581) with four doubles, one triple, five home runs and 12 RBIs in six games.

Blackmon also has reached base in 26 straight games, a streak that began May 1. It is tied for the second-longest streak of his career and his second-longest during a single season. He had a 26-game streak late 2016 and into 2017. His career best is 32 games, May 3-June 6, 2016.
