Fiesta Rojos

The Reds celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with activities September 17-20, which included pregame ceremonies, in-game activation and a full-day of events on September 20, capped off by the organization’s annual Fiesta Rojos at the ballpark.

Reds 2024 Roberto Clemente Nominee

On September 9, Major League Baseball announced the nominees for the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One, with left-handed pitcher Brent Suter receiving the honor for the Cincinnati Reds. The Clemente Award is the annual recognition of a Major League player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

On September 18, Suter was recognized on the field during a pregame ceremony. The Reds reliever selected the Sam Hubbard Foundation to be the recipient of the $7,500 donation that is associated with each nominee of the Roberto Clemente Award. Suter has previously partnered with the foundation by sponsoring Hubbard’s Cupboard through Crayons to Computers. Matt Kittell, executive director of the Sam Hubbard Foundation, accepted the check on the foundation’s behalf.

LatinoMVP Ceremony

Reds players Alexis Díaz and Elly De La Cruz were honored before the game on September 19 with 2023 LatinoMVP Awards. Díaz received 2023 National League Reliever/Closer of the Year honors while De La Cruz earned 2023 NL Rookie of the Year recognition. Established in 1990, the LatinoMVP is the oldest and most prestigious award given to Latin MLB athletes. This marks the first time that two of the award winners are from the same team.

Hispanic Community Advocate Award

Hispanic Community – Nicholas Castro

Nicholas Castro is the Assistant Dean of Inclusive Excellence in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati, and throughout his professional career has consistently shown a passion for diversity and inclusion by advocating on behalf of immigrants. Nick was instrumental in bringing a chapter of Latinx en Accion to University of Cincinnati Blue Ash, a group that strives to make positive impacts by serving Latinx students, along with championing a high school mentoring and tutoring program. As the father of five children, the son of a Mexican immigrant, and with over 15 years of being a higher education professional, Nick understands the struggles students must overcome during their college journey and has worked to support Hispanic and other underrepresented communities daily.

2024 Fiesta Rojos Recap

The Reds celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with their annual Hispanic Community Night, “Fiesta Rojos,” on Friday, Sept. 20 featuring activities in the community and ceremonies at Great American Ball Park.

Students from local schools were invited to visit the P&G MLB Cincinnati Reds Youth Academy for a baseball clinic, Q&A session with Reds Hispanic players, salsa dancing and lunch. Later that evening at the ballpark, many of the pregame and in-game ceremonies featured members of Cincinnati’s Hispanic community including including the national anthem singer, altafiber Hometown Hero and Kroger First Responder of the Game. Nicholas Castro, Assistant Dean of Inclusive Excellence in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati, received the Hispanic Heritage Community Advocate Award presented by PNC. In addition, the Reds held their traditional “Parade of Colors” presentation of the flags.
