Gennett homers in fourth straight game
Two-run shot comes as part of four-hit night vs. Dodgers
LOS ANGELES -- Scooter Gennett homered for the fourth time in as many games on Friday in a 6-2 Reds victory over the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The second baseman took Kenta Maeda deep for a two-run home run in the fifth inning, stretching the Reds' lead to 5-0.
Gennett's homer was part of a four-hit performance; he also singled in the first, third and ninth innings. His third-inning knock drove in Jose Peraza for the Reds' second run of the game.
"It's just baseball, man," Gennett. "So I just try to stay level and realize that I'm not always doing to do good. And when you're slumping or doing bad, you just realize you're going to come out of it. Keep it simple."
This is the first time in Gennett's career that he's homered in more than two consecutive games. He's now batting 10-for-19 with three doubles, four home runs and 10 RBIs over his last five games.
The last Reds player to homer in four straight games was Joey Votto, who did so earlier this season from April 24-27. The Reds' franchise record is five games, shared by seven players: Jay Bruce, Devin Mesoraco, Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey Jr., Johnny Bench, George Crowe and Ted Kluszewski.
It's no coincidence Gennett's power surge has come as the Reds are on a season-high four-game winning streak. Gennett and the rest of the Cincinnati lineup are hitting .263 (36-for-137) with 19 runs scored during the streak. The pitching staff has also compiled a 1.22 ERA (five earned runs in 37 innings) in that span.
"I think the biggest thing is just our pitching, they've been doing great," Gennett said. "I think if they're doing their thing, that gives us opportunity for our bats to come alive. The same thing goes if we're not hitting it's kind of harder on them, the pressure is on them.
"Once both of them come together, it's a lot of fun. And with our lineup, we can do a lot of damage."
