CINCINNATI – In a pair of moves on Wednesday that added infield and pitching depth, the Reds claimed infielder Max Schrock off waivers from the Cubs and agreed to terms with former D-backs pitcher Braden Shipley on a Minor League contract.

Cincinnati’s 40-man roster reached its limit with Schrock’s addition. Shipley has been invited to big league camp as a non-roster player.

Schrock, 26, spent the past three seasons in the Cardinals organization and reached the big leagues in 2020. He batted .176 with one home run in 11 games before being claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Oct. 30.

Primarily a second baseman and a third baseman as a professional, Schrock was a 13th-round pick by the Nationals in the 2013 MLB Draft. He was dealt to Oakland in 2016 and was then part of a December 2017 trade to St. Louis for outfielder Stephen Piscotty.

Over five Minor League seasons (480 games), Schrock is a .300/.354/.406 hitter with 24 homers.

Arizona’s first-round selection (15th overall) in the 2013 MLB Draft, Shipley last pitched in the Major Leagues in 2018. In 26 games (14 starts) over parts of three seasons, he was 4-6 with a 5.49 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP.

Shipley, who turns 29 on Feb. 22, pitched at Triple-A Reno in 2019 and was 4-5 with a 5.95 ERA in 30 games (15 starts).
