Souza's first injury rehab game a success
TORONTO -- Rays outfielder Steven Souza Jr., who is dealing with a right finger laceration, continued to make progress on Saturday night for a return to the team.
Souza was the designated hitter for Class A Advanced Charlotte in a 3-0 win over Tampa. He doubled and scored his first time up, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout in his first rehab game since going on the disabled list on July 7.
"He had a good day," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "... We communicated this morning. Pain free. Hand felt good. Everything fine."
Souza is expected to play seven innings for the Stone Crabs on Sunday.
• Meanwhile, outfield Desmond Jennings (left knee bursitis) began working out with Charlotte on Saturday.
• Left-hander Drew Smyly (torn left labrum) threw a bullpen on Saturday. His next action will be a second simulated game on Tuesday.
• Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (right hamstring strain) is expected to begin baseball activities early this week.
