No. 1 Rays ready to 'hit the ground running'
ST. PETERSBURG -- Before Saturday’s game, the Rays secured the top seed in the American League with an A’s loss to the Mariners. Clinching the No. 1 seed narrows down possible first-round opponents to the Blue Jays or the Yankees, both familiar foes.
But before the Rays start thinking about the start of the three-game Wild Card Series, on Tuesday, they have repeatedly said that their focus is on getting into the postseason with some momentum. The Rays did just that in the 4-3 win over the Phillies at Tropicana Field.
“It’s a huge accomplishment for this team,” infielder Brandon Lowe said of securing the top seed. “Everything that we’ve been through, it sweetens what our season has been so far, but we’re not anywhere near done and nobody thinks we are.”
While the result of the game was inconsequential, the Rays saw some encouraging things at the plate and on the mound. The Rays, who have hit a Majors-low .187 with runners in scoring position since Aug. 24, went 4-for-6 with RISP in Saturday’s win.
Mike Zunino was one of the key contributors on Saturday, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. In the fifth, Zunino worked a seven-pitch at-bat against Phillies starter Zack Wheeler and hit a slider into left field to drive in a run. In his next at-bat, Zunino lined a single to the left-field wall that had an exit velocity of 113.7 mph.
Zunino was playing in just his fifth game since returning from the injured list on Sept. 20 and has talked about wanting to get his timing down before the postseason. Saturday was a big step in the right direction. When Zunino records two hits or more, the Rays are 7-1 since the start of 2019.
“I’m just trying to get my timing down and stuff,” Zunino said. “It’s not always easy when you face as elite of arms as we have lately, but that’s also something that’s going to be needed during the playoffs. “
Though Zunino was the highlight at the plate, the Rays got contributions from the rest of the lineup. Lowe, Yoshitomo Tsutsugo and Willy Adames all chipped in with RBI singles. It’s the first time Adames has recorded a hit in back-to-back home games since Aug. 22-25.
“I was very encouraged with Willy. Another big hit for him and he’s trending in the right direction,” manager Kevin Cash said. “All in all, just a really good ballgame.”
The Rays also got quality performances on the mound. Ryan Yarbrough pitched the bulk of the innings and was sharp in his 3 1/3 innings. Yarbrough’s role in the Wild Card Series is still to be determined, but the left-hander could play a big role as the team’s No. 4 starter if the Rays advance into the ALDS in San Diego.
“It’s wherever they need me,” Yarbrough said. “I think we’re going to piece it all together and just hit the ground running, especially with this three-game series. We’re not taking it lightly, so we need to be ready at all times.”
After Yarbrough, the Rays got their usual contributions from the bullpen. Cash mentioned that the goal was to get Diego Castillo and Pete Fairbanks an inning on Saturday, their final tune-up before the postseason. Castillo tossed a scoreless inning while Fairbanks allowed a solo home run to Andrew McCutchen in the fifth. Aaron Slegers followed the middle relievers and recorded a nine-out save.
“Our pitching was really good,” Cash said. “Yarbs was outstanding, and everybody that followed suit seemed to be very efficient. And other than Slegers, who had a little bit of a hiccup and he kind of got beat on some ground balls that we just weren’t positioned [on], he did a really nice job of getting through three innings of work.”
Defensively, Kevin Kiermaier took advantage of an NL team testing out his arm. In the third, Kiermaier fired a 96.9 mph throw to home plate to get McCutchen, who was trying to score from second on a J.T. Realmuto single. The throw was Kiermaier’s fastest throw of the season, according to Statcast.
“It blows my mind every time he makes these unbelievable plays,” Yarbrough said. “He’s saved me more times than I can remember. Obviously today and then playoffs last year against the Astros. I gave him a lot of props when he came in.”
