BALTIMORE -- Kevin Kiermaier was ruled day to day after he exited Sunday’s 8-3 loss to the Orioles at Camden Yards with a left rib cage contusion. The "Outlaw" suffered the injury when he collided with the center-field wall as he tried to make another one of his marquee catches in the fifth inning.

X-rays came back negative, and Kiermaier said he felt like the wind got knocked out of him. Both he and manager Kevin Cash were encouraged that the ailment felt more muscular than anything, and they believe Monday’s off-day could be enough to get him straight.

“He said when we went out there, it knocked the wind out of him, and he came back in and he felt it kind of stiffen up,” Cash said. “Hopefully, it's just a muscle tightness kind of thing, and with an off-day tomorrow he can be right back in there.”

“It’s sore. It’s just all muscle,” Kiermaier said. “Just didn't quite land quite gracefully like I wanted to and hit my ribs there against the wall pretty good. … Just a lot of muscles that aren’t very happy right now.”

In the fifth inning, Baltimore's DJ Stewart roped a pitch from Jalen Beeks to right-center, and the ball kept drifting toward the track. Kiermaier leaped and landed without much, if any, room to brace himself before the wall. The ball tipped off Kiermaier’s glove and caromed off the top of the wall. It was initially ruled a homer, but a crew chief review overturned the call, and Stewart was awarded second base.

Kiermaier remained in the game to finish the defensive half-inning.

“I’m trying to limit as much damage as possible, and if I can try and take a run away right there, that’s what I’m trying to do,” Kiermaier said. “I’m trying to make plays. If things had worked out for us and we lose that game by one run and I didn't make the play, I would have been really upset about that.”

Upon Kiermaier’s exit, Avisaíl García shifted from right field to center, and Michael Brosseau entered the game in right to take Kiermaier’s spot in the batting order.

Kiermaier was 1-for-3 with an RBI single and two groundouts before his exit.
