Thairo Estrada #39

His first name, Thairo, pronounced TYE-row, is family derived. As Estrada tells it, his dad and uncle are named Jairo and so they just added a 'T' there to make it sound different, to make it sound more American. "I guess my mom knew I would come to the States and that would make it easier on people," Estrada said...Grew up idolizing Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. Estrada was originally signed by the Yankees as a shortstop and would hear Jeter speak while he was in their minor league system...Thairo and his wife, Lorena , have one daughter, Arantza...Returned home to Venezuela for the first time in four years during the 2022-23 offseason...In January of 2018, Estrada was shot during a robbery attempt while at a café with his wife in his hometown of Bejuma. He missed Spring Training plus the first part of the 2018 season. Doctors were unable to remove the small-caliber bullet but he was cleared to play early in the season. The bullet was removed in July at a hospital in Tampa after a lower back injury in June ended his season.

2023

The Giants Willie Mac Award winner led the team with 26 doubles and led all team position players with a 3.9 fWAR…finished second with 63 runs...Had a career-high, and team-leading, 23 stolen bases…his 23 stolen bases are the most by a Giant since Ángel Pagán (29) and Grégor Blanco (26) in 2012...Became the fifth middle infielder in Giants history to record at least 40 XBHs and 20 SBs in a single season, joining Jack Glasscock (SS, 1890), George Davis (SS, 1897, 1901), Larry Doyle (2B, 1909, 1910, 1911, 1912, 1915) and Frankie Frisch (2B, 1923, 1924) (Stats, LLC)...Was worth +19 Outs Above Average (Statcast), second-best in MLB...was a league-best +20 OAA at second base...Missed 35 total games on the Injured List…first missed nine games from May 27-June 6 with a left wrist sprain…missed 26 games from July 3-Aug. 13 with a left hand fracture after getting hit-by-pitch vs. New York-NL on July 2...Became the fourth second baseman (min. 50% of games played at 2B) in franchise history to have multiple 14+ home run seasons, joining Ray Durham (2004, 2006), Jeff Kent (1997-2002) and Robby Thompson (1990-93). 

2022

Had a career year in his second season with SF, setting career-bests in every offensive category...Ranked among the team leaders in stolen bases (21, 1st), hits (127, 1st), doubles (22, 3rd), RBI (62, 3rd), runs scored (71, 3rd) and games played (3rd, 140)…His 21 stolen bases were the most by a Giants infielder since Omar Vizquel stole 24 bases in 2006...The last Giants infielder with at least 14 homers and 21 steals in a season was the late Joe Morgan (14 homers and 24 steals in 1982)…The 21 steals were tied for seventh-most in the NL...Had two trips to the IL (July 3-8 on the COVID IL for symptoms but never tested positive and July 31-Aug. 7 on the concussion IL after being struck in the head by a Mark Leiter Jr. changeup on July 30)…Primarily played second base for SF, appearing in 102 games there but also saw action at shortstop (37 games), left field (18), third base (three games) and one game in CF.

2021

Bounced back and forth between the Giants and Triple-A Sacramento...hit .273 with seven home runs and 22 RBI over six stints with SF...Posted career-highs in games (52), runs (19), hits (33), doubles (4), home runs (7), RBI (22) and walks (9)...Had seven home runs in 52 games...had four career homers over 61 games with the Yankees...His four hits on July 10 vs. WAS were a career-high...his five RBI on July 2 at ARI were also a career-high...Hit .333 (70x210) with 14 doubles, a triple, nine homers and 40 RBI in 50 games for the River Cats...Welcomed to SF from the Yankees on April 11 in exchange for cash...Combined to hit 16 homers in 2021 between Sacramento and San Francisco...had never hit more than 11 (2019) in a single season in his career.

Made his first career Opening Day roster and hit .167 (8-for-48) with 8R, 1HR and 3RBI in 26 games over four stints with the Yankees (7/23-8/5, 8/8-G1, 8/9, 8/14-9/15)...Played in 24 of the Yankees’ 30 games from 8/14-9/15...Made his first start of the season (at 3B) and hit his first homer of the year to lead off the fourth inning on 8/17 vs. Boston (1-for-4, 1R, 1HR, 1RBI)…was his fourth career home run and first since 5/22/19 at Baltimore...Played in every game of the Yankees’ five-game series vs. the Mets from 8/28-30, which included doubleheaders on 8/28 and 8/30 (2-for-8, 2R, 1HP).

2019

Saw his first Major League action, hitting .250/.294/.438 (16-for-64) with 12R, 3 doubles, 3HR, 12RBI, 3BB and 4SB in 35 games over four stints with the Yankees (4/4-6, 4/21-6/6, 6/29-30, 8/14-9/29)...Made his Major League debut as a 10th-inning pinch-hitter for Ford in 4/21 win vs. Kansas City, hitting a sacrifice bunt...Collected his first Major League hit with a second-inning single on 4/23 at Los Angeles-AL...Started in LF on 4/26 at San Francisco, his first professional appearance (Majors and minors) at a position outside the infield...Hit his first Major League HR off fellow Venezuelan Félix Hernández on 5/6 vs. Seattle...Served as the Yankees' "26th Man" for the London Series against Boston from 6/29-30, but did not play...Was placed on the 10-day injured list from 8/18-9/8 with a right hamstring strain...In 60 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, hit .266 (64-for-241) with 39R, 17 doubles, 2 triples, 8HR and 32RBI.

2018

Was limited to 18 total games with Single-A Tampa and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, combining to hit .192 (15-for-78) with 5R, 3 doubles and 8RBI…spent the majority of the season on the minor league disabled list over two stints (4/6-18 and 5/8-9/24)...Following the season, played for the Arizona Fall League's Glendale Desert Dogs, batting .238 (19-for-80) with 9R, 2 doubles and 7RBI in 19 games.

2017

Spent the entire season with Double-A Trenton, batting .301 (149-for-495) with 72R, 19 doubles, 4 triples, 6HR and 48RBI in 122 games…ranked second in the Eastern League in hits, tied for fourth in in runs scored and ranked sixth in batting average…ranked among Yankees farmhands in hits (149, second) and batting average (.301, fourth)…played primarily SS (90G), but also saw time at 2B (23G) and 3B (3G)... At 21 years and two months, was the seventh-youngest player to make a 2017 Opening Day roster in the EL... Was named to the EL Mid-Season and Postseason All-Star teams... Following the season, played for Scottsdale in the Arizona Fall League, batting .342 (27-for-79) with 13R, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1HR and 10RBI in 20 games…was named to the league's Fall Stars Game and the AFL's 2017 Top Prospects Team... Was tabbed by Baseball America as the Yankees' No. 9 prospect following the season... Was added to the Yankees' 40-man roster on 11/20/17.

2016

Split the season between Single-A Charleston and Single-A Tampa and hit .290/.346/.391 (132-for-455) with 63R, 18 doubles, 2 triples, 8HR and 49RBI in 118 games…stole 18 bases in 26 attempts (69.2%)…was named an MiLB.com Organization All-Star…ranked sixth among Yankees farmhands in batting average... Began the season by batting .286/.324/.429 (40-for-140) with 11R, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 5HR and 19RBI in 35 games for the RiverDogs before a promotion to Tampa on 5/23... In 83 games with Tampa, hit .292/.355/.375 (92-for-315) with 52R, 15 doubles, 1 triple, 3HR and 30RBI…overall, saw time at 2B (57G/56GS), 3B (47GS) and SS (8G/7GS).

2015

Batted .267 (66-for-247) with 37R, 17 doubles, 2HR, 23RBI and 8SB in 63 games with short-season Single-AStaten Island…was named a NYPL Mid-Season All-Star…reached base safely in 20 consecutive games from7/26-8/22 (G1), hitting .351 (27-for-77) over that stretch…batted .356 (26-for-73) against lefties.

2014

Combined at short-season Single-A Staten Island and the GCL Yankees 1 to bat .272 (22-for-81) with 13R, 3doubles, 6RBI and 7BB in 23 games.

2013

Made his professional debut with the GCL Yankees 2, batting .278 (49-for-176) with 28R, 11 doubles, 5 triples,2HR, 17RBI and 7SB in 50 games…ranked 10th among Yankees minor leaguers in batting average.
