2002

Underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder March 8 and missed the entire season...Dr. Richard Hawkins performed the operation at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo...during the procedure, Dr. Hawkins repaired a small portion of the labrum that was detached with suture anchors and also mildly tightened the shoulder capsule...placed on the 60-day D.L. March 12.

2001

Suffered a then career-high 10 losses in 24 starts between Colorado and Houston (4-10, 7.06 ERA)...went 4-8 with a 7.14 ERA (109.2 IP, 87 ER) with Houston in 20 starts and 0-2 with a 6.65 ERA (23.0 IP, 17 ER) in 4 starts for Colorado...Was acquired by Colorado from Houston, along with a player to be named (Garett Gentry) in exchange for RHP Pedro Astacio and cash considerations on July 31...was sent to Colorado Springs on Aug. 29 on a medical rehab assignment...was reinstated from his rehab and activated Sept. 4...Surrendered 34 home runs, tied for the 5th most in the National League...lost his last 7 decisions of the season from May 22-Oct. 6, a career long losing streak...Became the 1st Houston pitcher to win his 1st Opening Day start since Mike Scott in 1987, claiming an 11-3 win over Milwaukee on April 3...was the 1st Astros Opening Day starter other than Shane Reynolds since 1995...The day after his 20th start, July 17, he went on Houston's D.L. for right biceps tendinitis and was on the D.L. when the trade was completed to Colorado.

Voted Astros Pitcher of the Year by the Houston chapter of the BBWAA, after going 17-7 with a 4.81 ERA in 30 starts...his 17 victories tied for 6th in the N.L. and his .708 winning percentage ranked 3rd... was Houston's only pitcher to record double digit victories...Started the year on the D.L. and made 3 rehab starts...got his 1st start of the year on April 23 vs. San Diego (no decision)...won 5 consecutive starts, June 22-July 16...after a July 21 loss to St. Louis, won a career-best 6 straight decisions covering 7 starts from July 26-Aug. 27...Threw a 4-hitter on Aug. 6 vs. Montreal, his 1st Major League complete game...earned Co-NL Player of the Week honors for the week of July 31-Aug. 6 (Will Clark) after going 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA...struck out a season-high 9 batters on Aug. 11 at Philadelphia.

1999

Began the year in Houston's bullpen before entering the starting rotation prior to the All-Star break...Was 4-2 with a 3.40 ERA (82.0 IP, 32 ER) as a starter...made his 1st start on July 3 at Cincinnati after having pitched the most innings (39.1) and making the most appearances (27) of any Astros reliever through the 1st 3 months of the season...Earned his 1st victory as a starter with a 10-4 win over the Cubs on Aug. 7...struck out a career-high 10 batters on Sept. 15 vs. Philadelphia...underwent surgery following the season on Oct. 21, 1999 to repair a stretched right rotator cuff (Dr. Bill Bryan).

1998

Made 14 starts at New Orleans (AAA) before being recalled by Houston on June 20...would remain with the Astros for the rest of the year...Made his first M.L. start on June 20 vs. Cincinnati in place of Mike Hampton (D.L.)...allowed 5 hits and 4 runs in 6.1 IP with 9 strikeouts and left with a lead that the bullpen failed to hold... Earned the 1st save of his professional career July 29 vs. Florida (3.0 IP, 0 ER)...Recorded 1st M.L. victory Aug. 10 vs. Milwaukee (1.0 IP, 0 H)...prior to Spring Training, pitched a nohitter in his final Winter League start for Santurce of the Puerto Rican Winter League, Dec. 14 against Caguas.
