Began the season as the Orioles' most effective pitcher out of the bullpen before moving into the starting rotation in late May...Finished as the club's leader in wins (14) and ERA (3.59) and was 2nd in innings pitched (170.2). Finished 6th in the American League in ERA, the first Orioles pitcher to rank in the top 10 since Mussina in 2000 (3rd, 3.79). Also ranked 8th in the AL in fewest baserunners per 9IP (11.60) and opponents' slugging pct. (.392) was 11th in opponents' batting average (.252). Went 11-7 with a 3.95 ERA in 23 starts (139.0IP, 144H, 61ER) and 3-2 with a 1.99 ERA in 14 relief apparances (31.2IP, 20H, 7ER). Pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to hold the lead in the Orioles' win on Opening Day against Boston...Entered in the 6th inning with 2 runners on base and got Johnny Damon to ground out to escape the jam. It was his first relief appearance since 4/19/02 at Tampa Bay, having made 54 starts for the Orioles between bullpen outings...Four days later, on April 8, he worked the final 1.1 innings to earn the win in the O's 3-2 victory over Boston in 13 innings. Went 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA in 5 starts in September, including back-to-back wins over New York, September 3 and September 10. Pitched his only complete game of the season and his 2nd career shutout on September 26 vs. Detroit, beating the Tigers 5-0...Allowed 3 hits, 2 of them in the 3rd inning, and did not walk a batter. In the first 3 innings of his 22 starts, Lopez pitched to a 3.00 ERA (69.0IP, 69H, 23ER)...In innings 4-9, he had a 4.89 ERA (70.0IP, 73H, 38ER). Tied for first in the AL with a 1.000 fielding pct...Handled 37 chances without an error, one of 11 pitchers in the league to field at least 30 chances cleanly. Opened the season with a solid six-inning, two earned run-outing against the Indians on March 31, but struggled in the month of April (8.46 ERA) ... Strained his left oblique muscle on May 1, knocking him out of action until June 15 ... Put together a four-game stretch from July 1-17 where he went 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 28.2 innings ... Finished the season in encouraging fashion, holding the Yankees to two runs and five hits in a 3-2 Orioles victory on Sept. 26.
