Matthew Stephen Roney...was selected to *Baseball America's * First-Team High School All-American team following his senior season at Edmond North High School in 1998...posted an 11-3 record, a 0.68 ERA and 171 strikeouts...earned Oklahoma Player of the Year honors in both 1997 and 1998...named to *USA Today's* High School Honorable Mention All-American squad in both 1997 and 1998.
2005
Pitched for three teams in two organizations and was a combined 5-3 with five saves and a 1.85 ERA in 49 games, all in relief...the relief appearances were the first of his minor league career although he made 34 relief appearances with Detroit in 2003...had professional bests in games and saves and the ERA was the lowest of his career...allowed a .232 opponents batting average which included a .209 (37 for 177) mark against right-handed hitters and .264 (33 for 125) against left-handers...opponents batting average dropped to .190 (16 for 84) with runners in scoring position...struck out 82 and walked 25 for a strikeout to walk ratio of 3.3 to 1...allowed just four home runs in 82.2 innings or one per 20.7 innings...tossed one or more innings in 44 of his 49 outings, including 22 outings of two or more innings...began the season at Double-A Erie in the Detroit organization and was 0-1 with a save and a 1.25 ERA in 11 appearances...held right-handers to a .116 batting average...did not allow a run in six outings on the road (11.0 ip)...recorded his first professional save on April 29 at Binghamton with 3.0 scoreless innings (1 h, 5 so)...did not allow a run over his final four outings with Erie and his first seven outings with Toledo for a scoreless streak of 27.1 innings over an 11-game stretch from April 29 to June 4 (16 h, 7 bb, 23 so)...was promoted to Triple-A Toledo on May 13 and was 1-1 with three saves and a 0.95 ERA in 14 relief appearances...did not allow a home run in 28.1 innings and opponents batted .148 with RISP...tossed a season high 4.0 scoreless innings and picked up the save in his first outing on May 13 at Pawtucket...struck out a season high six in 3.0 innings in his final outing with Toledo on June 26 against Indianapolis...was released on July 1 and signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers organization on July 7...was assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma where he finished the season by going 4-1 with a save and a 3.03 ERA in 24 appearances...did not allow a run over a nine-game stretch from July 21 to August 9 (9.2 ip, 6 h, 1 bb, 11 so)...posted a 5.40 ERA in two postseason appearances for Oklahoma (3.1 ip, 1 h, 2 r, 2 er, 2 bb, 1 so).

Saw action with both Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo during his second season in the Tigers organization...tied for second in the Eastern League with three complete games, tied for fifth with 20 home runs allowed, tied for eighth with nine wins and tied for ninth with nine losses...won four straight decisions April 26-May 17, posting a 3.41 ERA (12 er in 31.2 ip) over the five-start stretch...tied for third in the league with 38.0 innings pitched during May, tied for fourth with three wins and was fifth with 32 strikeouts...finished 3-2 with a 4.26 ERA in six starts during the month...tossed a three-hit shutout June 12 at Harrisburg in the second game of a doubleheader - tied for fourth in the Eastern League with the one shutout for the season...named the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for June 7-13 after posting a 2-0 record and 1.93 ERA (3 er in 14.0 ip) in two starts...recorded his second complete game of the season June 18 at Altoona in the second game of a doubleheader...however, took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits in six innings...in six starts during June, he compiled a 3-3 record and a 4.03 ERA...led the league with two complete games during the month, tied for fourth with three losses, was seventh with 38.0 innings pitched and tied for seventh with three wins...struggled in six outings during July, going 1-3 with an 8.80 ERA...his ERA was highest in the league during the month, while he tied for fifth with three losses...earned the win by tossing his third complete game on August 7 at Reading...his option was transferred to Toledo on August 13...started five games for the Mud Hens before having his optioned transferred back to Erie on September 5...started one game during the Eastern League playoffs for the SeaWolves, taking the loss after allowing eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in 5.1 innings.

Rookie right-hander jumped to the majors from Double-A after being selected in the Rule 5 Draft by Pittsburgh from Colorado and later shipped to Detroit for cash considerations...finished second among all American League rookies with a .262 batting average against, while he was seventh with 100.2 innings pitched and tied for eighth with 45 appearances...tied for third among league rookies with his nine losses...saw action as both a starter and reliever for the Tigers in his rookie season...was 1-7 with a 6.80 ERA in 11 starts and 0-2 with a 4.18 ERA in 34 relief outings...fared better at Comerica Park, going 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA in 24 games...was 0-8 with a 7.58 ERA in 21 appearances on the road...held the opposition to a .200 batting average at Comerica Park, while they hit .322 on the road...was tougher on right-handed hitters, holding them to a .232 (48 for 207) batting average...lefties hit .297 (54 for 182)...limited the opposition to .233 batting average with runners in scoring position, including a .114 batting average while pitching in relief which ranked third-best among AL relievers...as a reliever, he held the first batter faced to a .194 (6 for 31) batting average...made his Major League debut on April 2 versus Minnesota, allowing one run in an inning of work...suffered the first loss and blown save of his major league career on May 20 at Cleveland, surrendering a three-run home run to Brandon Phillips in the bottom of the ninth inning...worked 4.1 innings of scoreless relief on June 15 against Colorado, the longest relief outing of his major league career...made his first major league start on June 21 at Colorado...blanked the Rockies on three hits for three innings before walking the first two batters in the fourth inning, allowing both to score as he was chased from the game during the inning...singled in the third inning against Colorado's Jason Jennings for the first hit of his major league career...turned in a brilliant performance on July 1 against Toronto for the first win of his ML career, blanking the Blue Jays on one hit for seven innings...retired each of the final 16 batters he faced and 19 of the final 20...took the loss on July 6 at Kansas City, beginning a string of seven straight losses from July 6-August 21...that tied for the fifth-longest losing streak in the league during the 2003 season...was moved back to the bullpen after his start at Texas on August 14...did not fare as well in his second stint in the bullpen as he did during his first, going 0-1 with a 6.89 ERA in 12 relief appearances from August 18-September 27, compared to 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 22 relief outings April 2-June 15...finished 0-2 with a 6.43 ERA (5 er in 7.0 ip) in three starts for Grand Canyon in the Arizona Fall League following the season.
2002
Combined for a 7-12 record, a 4.70 ERA and 149 strikeouts in 27 starts between Single-A Asheville and Double-A Carolina of the Rockies organization...ranked second among all of Colorado's minor leaguers with 149 strikeouts...fanned 10 batters in a no-decision during his first start of the season on April 4 against South Georgia, allowing one run on four hits in four innings...surrendered just three runs on 12 hits over a 22.0-inning stretch during his three starts from May 6-17, posting a 1.23 ERA...fired a three-hit shutout June 14 at Macon, striking out a season-high 11 batters...the one shutout tied him for fifth in the South Atlantic League...earned South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week honors June 14-20 for his performance on June 14 at Macon...held right-handers in the South Atlantic League to a .227 (40 for 176) batting average while lefthanders batted .304 (42 for 138)...joined Carolina late in June...struggled in his five starts during July, going 1-3 with a 7.48 ERA...did not fare much better during August for Carolina, posting a 1-3 record and a 5.88 ERA...lefties in the Southern League batted .267 (36 for 135) with him on the mound, while right-handers hit .264 (37 for 140) against him.

Was third on Asheville's staff with 23 games started, 121.0 innings and 115 strikeouts...tied for fourth in the South Atlantic League with 16 home runs allowed...won three straight starts from April 26-May 6...posted a 2.12 ERA during the three-start stretch...fired a complete game in the first game of a doubleheader at Columbus on June 17, taking the loss after allowing two runs on six hits and fanning seven batters in six innings...landed on the disabled list July 9-19 with right shoulder tendinitis...won each of his final three decisions of the season, August 12-29...during the four-start stretch he recorded a 2.25 ERA...struck out a season-best nine batters in his win on August 18 against Charleston-WV...limited right-handers to a .239 batting average...left-handed batters hit .326...held the lead-off batter in an inning to a .183 batting average...appeared in two games during the South Atlantic League playoffs, going 0-1 with an 18.00 ERA (6 er in 3.0 ip).
2000
Tied for the Northwest League lead while at Single-A Portland with 15 games started...was second in the league with 44 walks, fifth with 80.1 innings and tied for fifth with seven wins and six home runs allowed...topped his Portland staff in wins, games started, innings pitched and strikeouts (85)...fanned a season-high 10 batters at Everett on June 25, but did not figure in the decision after allowing three runs on five hits in 5.1 innings...won his final four decisions for Portland August 12-September 3, posting a 0.92 ERA during the five-start stretch...in six starts during August, he finished 3-1 with a 1.29 ERA...held the opposition to a .231 batting average...named the 14th-best prospect in the Northwest League following the season by
