The 2003 Pacific Coast League MVP for Triple-A Sacramento, Koonce dropped in the organization's depth chart with the emergence of Dan Johnson, but he's a powerful hitter and a decent first baseman. 1998-returned to the Western League for the second consecutive season but this time played for Chico where he hit a career high .331 in 69 games...added 10 home runs, 41 RBI and a career high .517 slugging percentage...led the Heat in batting...appeared in 47 games at first base and 19 in the outfield.
1999-signed with the San Diego Padres organization following the 1998 season and played for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga in the California League...hit .285 with 19 home runs and 79 RBI...added 76 walks and a career high 11 hit by pitches...tied for third in the Padres farm system in home runs...led his team in walks and on-base percentage (.392) and finished second in games (132), at bats (474), runs (76), total bases (210), home runs, RBI and hit by pitches...hit .211 against left handed pitching and .316 against right handers...had an 11-game hitting streak from April 21 to May 3 as part of a 23-game stretch from April 16 to May 12 where he reached base safely via hit or walk in each game...homered twice on May 9 against Lancaster and July 3 at Lancaster...had a season high four hits on July 30 at High Desert...best month of the season was July when he hit .337 (35 for 104) with seven home runs and 19 RBI in 27 games...batted .316 (6 for 19) with a home run and five RBI in five playoff games for the Quakes.
2000-spent his second consecutive season at Rancho Cucamonga and responded with career highs in runs (92), hits (140) and doubles (40) while matching his best in triples (3)...also walked 107 times which ranked second in all of minor league baseball...led the Padres farm system in RBI (93), tied for second in home runs (18) and tied for seventh in batting (.295)...led the California League in doubles and walks, tied for the league lead in extra base hits (61), ranked third in on-base percentage (.425), tied for third in games (137), tied for fourth in slugging (.505) and fifth in total bases (240)...led his team in doubles, home runs, RBI, walks, slugging and on-base percentage...average improved to .339 (21 for 62) with runners in scoring position and two outs...his monthly average was never higher than .305 or lower than .276...reached base safely via hit or walk in 28 consecutive games from May 9 to June 5...homered in three consecutive games, August 19-21.
2001-spent most of the season at Double-A Mobile before being moved up to Triple-A Portland on August 27...hit .266 with 13 home runs and 48 RBI in 109 games with Mobile before going 3 for 14 (.214) with a home run and two RBI in six games with Portland...batted a combined .263 at both stops but added 94 walks for a .429 on-base percentage...the walks ranked fifth in all of minor league baseball and the on-base percentage was sixth...led the Southern League in walks (89) and on-base percentage (.429)...led Mobile in runs scored (52), home runs, walks and on-base percentage...while at Mobile, he appeared in 56 games at first base and 27 in left field...also hit .303 (20 for 66) in 19 games at designated hitter and was 0 for 6 with four walks as a pinch hitter...reached base safely via hit or walk in 25 consecutive games from May 7 to June 8...homered twice on July 20 against Jacksonville...best month of the season at Mobile was August when he hit .383 (18 for 47) with three home runs and 11 RBI in 18 games...five of those RBI came on August 17 against Orlando.
