Started the season with the San Diego Padres before he was traded to the Marlins along with Rich Rodriguez for Trevor Hoffman, Andres Berumen and Jose Martinez on June 24...was the youngest of the 6 defending batting champions to be traded in the last 60 years...Bill Madlock was the last to be traded after winning a title, going from the Cubs to the Giants for Bobby Murcer in 1977...made history when he was voted onto the N.L. All-Star team, making him the first player from a first-year expansion team to start an All-Star Game...hit a home run off Angels' Mark Langston in his first at-bat.

1992

Made a serious run to become the first N.L. Triple Crown winner since Joe Medwick in 1937...led the N.L. in hitting (.330) and finished 3rd in home runs (33) and 5th in RBI (100)...finished 3rd in the MVP voting...was named The Sporting News Player of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year and was selected to its Silver Slugger team...became the youngest batting champion since Los Angeles' Tommy Davis in 1962...was also the first right-handed batter to win a batting title since Bill Madlock in 1983...his 33 home runs were the most by a batting champion since Fred Lynn hit 39 to go with his .333 average in 1979...it is also the best figure in the N.L. since 1972 when Billy Williams hit .333 with 33 homers...his average stood at .295 on May 5 when he started a career-best 18-game hit streak that raised his average to .345 on May 25...named N.L. Was limited to just 50 games with the Brewers due to wrist and shoulder problems...injured his left shoulder while sliding into third base at Baltimore on April 28, an injury that hampered him for the rest of the season...then injured his left wrist on a checked swing on May 19 and was limited to only 4 games before getting back into the lineup on May 28...after struggling with the wrist injury he was placed on the disabled list from June 12-July 2 with a displaced extensor tendon in his left wrist...returned on July 3, batting .348 in his final 15 games before returning to the disabled list on July 26 for the remainder of the season due to shoulder problems...Dr. Frank Jobe performed surgery to repair an impingement in Sheffield's left shoulder on August 23.

1990

Set then personal highs with a .294 batting average, 125 games, 487 at-bats, 67 runs, 143 hits, 67 RBI, 30 doubles, one triple, 10 homers, 44 walks and 25 steals...led the team in steals, the first Brewer other than Paul Molitor to accomplish the feat since Robin Yount (14) in 1984...also led the club with a .350 on-base percentage and a .352 average with men on base.

1989

Was named to the Toppsb Rookie All-Star Team as a shortstop...was the Brewersb Opening Day shortstop, but played 6 games at third base in April because of a leg problem suffered in spring training...was optioned to Triple-A Denver on July 14...while there, was diagnosed with a broken sesamoid bone in his right foot and was placed on the disabled list on July 26 (retroactive to July 14)...came off the disabled list on September 9 and played third base for the remainder of the season.

1988

Named Co-Minor League Player of the Year by The Sporting News...began the year at Double-A El Paso before being promoted to Denver on July 6 and once again to Milwaukee on September 2...compiled a .314 batting average with 32 homers and 131 RBI in 158 games at all 3 stops...belted a home run off Seattle's Mark Langston on September 9 for his first big league hit.

1987

Led Stockton to the Northern Division crown of the California League...led the league with 103 RBI and led all league shortstops with 77 double plays...was named to leaguebs mid- and postseason All-Star teams and voted the league's Rookie of the Year...voted the best hitting prospect and the most dangerous hitter by league managers.

1986

Batted .365 at rookie level Helena and led the league with 71 RBI...led the league's shortstops by turning 34 double plays.
