Turned down college baseball opportunities after graduating from Christopher Columbus High School (Fla.) to pursue an Olympic Ice Skating career...Represented the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, where he earned a Silver Medal in short track speed skating...Also represented the United States at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan and earned another Silver Medal with the baseball team...Was teammates with Triston Casas during the 2020 Olympics...Became the sixth athlete and third American to medal in both the Winter and Summer Olympics...Was the United States flag bearer at the 2020 Summer Olympics alongside Sue Bird (basketball)...Returned to baseball in 2011 at Salt Lake Community College, where he was named to the All-Conference team at shortstop that season...His older brother, Nick, played in the Dodgers Minor League system as an outfielder and first baseman from 2000-06.

Spent 2023 with the Brewers and Red Sox organizations, playing in 64 Triple-A games between Nashville (63) and Worcester (one) and batting .286 (59-for-206) with seven HR, 17 SB, a .402 OBP and an .878 OPS.

Appeared in 24 games at the Major League level with the Marlins from Sept. 7 until the end of the season, producing a .188 average (12- for-64) with four doubles, one triple and one home run with six RBI…also tallied four walks and a stolen base... Roped his first big league home run on Sept. 11 at Atlanta, a solo shot off Charlie Morton... Had his best game in the regular-season finale, going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI…also stole a base.. Made stops at Rookie-level GCL Marlins, Single-A Jupiter and Triple-A Jackson, combining to hit .320/.449/.500 with a .949 OPS… totaled five doubles, six home runs, 24 RBI, scored 28 runs and walked 21 times in 36 games... Was solid defensively, playing second base (19 GS), third base (10 GS), and shortstop (4 GS), committing just four errors in 122 total chances.

Eduardo Cortes Alvarez made his Major League debut on Aug. 5, 2020, in Baltimore...After going hitless in his first three games, he recorded his first hit on Aug. 9 against Jacob deGrom. He finished that game 3x4 (2x2 against deGrom) with a double and a stolen base against the Mets at Citi Field...Placed on the Paternity List on Aug. 21 (16 days after MLB debut) for the birth of his first child, a son named Jett...One of 18 players make their MLB debuts in 2020. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that set a new single-season Franchise record (defeating 16 in 2010).

Eduardo Cortes Alvarez played 66 games for Triple-A New Orleans in 2019, his first year with the Marlins organization.

2018

Spent all of 2018 with the Triple-A Charlotte in the White Sox organization, playing 101 games and batting .253 with 26 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, and 37 RBI.

2017

Combined to hit .235 (101x429) with 16 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 39 RBI over 126 games between Double-A Birmingham and Charlotte in 2017.

2016

Combined to hit .265 (114x430) with 19 doubles, three triples, six home runs, 65 RBI, 11 stolen bases and 58 runs scored over 116 games between Birmingham and Charlotte in 2016.

2015

Batted a combined .296 (133x450) with 29 doubles, seven triples, five home runs, 53 RBI, 88 runs scored and 53 stolen bases over 123 games between Single-A Kannapolis and Single-A Winston-Salem in 2015...Ranked seventh among White Sox organizational leaders in walks (50) and 10th in runs scored while leading the Barons with 62 RBI.

2014

Combined to hit .346 (63-182 with 11 doubles, five home runs, 26 RBI, 32 runs scored and nine stolen bases over 45 games between Arizona Rookie League White Sox and Kannapolis in 2014...He was named a SAL Midseason All-Star while leading Kannapolis in walks, runs (64), steals (42), doubles (23), on-base percentage and batting average (.285)...Ranked second in the South Atlantic League in on-base percentage (.408), third in walks (69) and sixth in stolen bases (42).

In 2012, underwent surgery to repair torn patellar tendons that left him completely immobile for four weeks.
