Attended Tokai University (Tokyo, Japan)...Drafted by Yomiuri in the first round of the 2012 Nippon Professional Baseball Draft, the same year that Shohei Ohtani was selected in the first round by Hokkaido...Was also picked in the first round by Hanshin in 2011, but did not sign...His uncle, Tatsunori Hara, played 15 seasons for Yomiuri from 1981-95 and won three Japan Series titles (1981, 89, & 94), was the 1983 Central League MVP, and the 1981 Central League Rookie of the Year; also coached for the Giants from 1999-01, and then manager from 2002-03, 2006-15, and 2019-23; Sugano played for him from 2014-15 and 2019-23...Hara also managed Team Japan to victory in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
