Travis Howard Phelps
2002
Made 26 appearances over two tours with the Rays in 2002.
His ERA was more than a full run higher than his rookie season and his walks per 9 innings went from 3.4 to 6.4.
Made his first opening day roster and appeared in 4 games (0-0, 9.00 ERA, 3-IP, 3-H, 3-ER) before being optioned to AAA Durham April 15.
Recalled June 25 and made 22 appearances over the remainder of the season, pitching to a 4.41 ERA (34.2-IP, 26-H, 17-ER, 25-BB, 35-K).
Nine of his last 14 appearances were scoreless (from Aug. 1), while compiling a 2.74 ERA (23.0- IP, 18-H, 7-ER).
Worked a career-high 3.2 innings in his final outing of the season, Sep 27 at Boston after Paul Wilson could not finish the 2nd...allowed just solo HR to Brian Daubach.
Recorded his lone season win Aug. 30 @ TEX (1.2-IP, 3-H, 1-R/ER, 2-BB,1-SO) - first victory since Aug. 21, 2001 @ Baltimore.
Pitched to a 3.10 ERA (20.1-IP, 7-ER) when he worked 2.0 or more innings; and 6.75 (17.1-IP, 13-ER) when less than 2.0.
Held opposing hitters to a .222 avg. (30/135), lowest on the staff by any pitcher that worked 25 or more innings....held right-handed hitters to a stingy .187 mark (14/75) 2nd-toughest to righties on the staff behind Jorge Sosa (.183).
For his career opponents have hit just .224 (83-370), including .213 by righthanders (44/207).
Went 3-2 with 8 saves and a 4.35 ERA in 27 app. for the Bulls (31.0-IP, 29-H, 15-R/ER, 14-BB, 34- SO, 2-HR)...allowed runs in just 7 of his outings, including just 3 times in his last 21 appearances.
2001
Rookie had a pair of tours with the Rays in 2001, his first at the major league level: April 19-April 24 and May 10 thru season´s end...was one of nine Rays rookies to make his major league debut in 2001.
Ranked 3rd among AL rookies in appearances with 49 behind TOR Robert File (60) and ANA Ben Weber (56)...also finished 3rd on the Rays behind Doug Creek (66) and Esteban Yan (54).
In addition ranked 3rd among AL rookie relievers in ERA (min. 60-IP) behind File (3.27) and Weber (3.42)...finished 5th among all AL rookie pitchers with a .226 opponents average behind SEA Joel Pineiro (.191), File (.220) and DET Victor Santos (.222).
Converted 5 saves, also 3rd among AL rooks behind BAL Ryan Kohlmeier and Willis Roberts who each had 6...no Rays rookie has ever had more than one save in a season before 2001 (Victor Zambrano had two)....threw more than one inning each of his saves opportunities.
Were the first saves of his professional career...was a closer in college, though.
Was 5-for-6 in save opportunities with his lone blown save June 26 at Fenway when he entered up 5-1 in the 7th and allowed a grand slam to Dante Bichette, his first batter faced...Rays lost 7-6.
Allowed 16 of his earned runs in 5 of his 49 appearances - pitched to a 1.13 ERA (55.2-IP/7-ER) in his other 44 major league outings.
Ended the season with 7.0 scoreless innings (3-H, 0-BB, 5-K).
Tossed season-high 3.0 innings on four occasions...when throwing 3 innings - 12.0-IP, 4-H, 0-R, 3-BB, 6-SO.
Made his major league debut April 19 vs. BOS, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings (1-HB).
Came on June 7 @ TOR and suffered the 8-7 loss after an 8th-inning Aubrey Huff error led to 3 unearned runs...was first major league decision.
Tossed a scoreless 1.1 June 24 vs. NYY and picked up his first major league win as Rays came from behind to beat the Yankees 5-4.
Entered Aug. 21 vs. BAL tied 4-4, pitched 1.1 scoreless (2-BB, 3-K) and recorded his 2nd big league victory , 8-4.
Held opponents to a .226 average (53-235) including a .182 mark (8-44) to first batters faced.
Became the 8th Rays draft pick to reach the majors behind Rupe, Callaway, Wheeler, Huff, Hall, Kelly and Brewer.
Was the Rays´ 89th selection in the club´s inaugural draft of ´96 (pick 1721) and signed on May 24, 1997...he is the lowest draft pick ever to reach the majors (prev. 3B Scott Sebol was the 88th round pick of the Yankees in 1996).
At Durham was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 9 relief outings, throwing 15.2 scoreless innings (11-H, 1-BB, 12-SO, .204 opp. avg.).
