Phillies All-Star Teacher Surprise
Mrs. Jill Garren, a beloved special education teacher for 3rd to 6th-grade students at Samuel Mickle School (and huge Phillies fan!), received the surprise of her life as she wass honored as a Phillies All-Star Teacher, a program powered by Constellation.
As Mrs. Garren walked onto the baseball field, she was surprised by 800 of her students, Phillies Ambassador Scott Palmer, Phillies Ballgirls and Buzz the Hornet school mascot, who were all waving rally towels in honor of their newly announced All-Star teacher.
Mrs. Garren, who has her students high-five a hand-drawn poster of the Phanatic as they enter the classroom every day, got to high-five the Phillie Phanatic in person, as he made a surprise entrance near a life-size Phanatic portrait painted by art students in Mrs. Garren’s honor.
During the event, Mrs. Garren also took part in an All-Star ceremonial first pitch with former All-Star and 1993 National League Champion Mickey Morandini. Mrs. Garren will also be honored with an All-Star Seventh-Inning Stretch with the Phanatic (which she also does daily with her students), and of course, a victory lap around the field.
Plus, former teacher Stacy Kuhen read the essay that she wrote to the Phillies, which was selected from over hundreds of nominations.
The special event was in advance of Teacher Appreciation Night powered by Constellation at Citizens Bank Park, where Mrs. Garren joined nine other local All-Star Teachers on Friday, May 6, to be honored before that night’s game against the New York Mets.
